Duckefett[edit]

This article is up for deletion and I'm trying to determine if there are good sources out there. We've found one in German at google books but we can't see the entire page. Can someone help us see the whole mention so we can determine whether this is a bare mention or lengthy coverage? Thanks for any help! valereee (talk) 12:42, 15 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I couldn't get a better preview, but managed to tease out some more text by repeatedly searching for the last phrase of each search result:

For me, from an ordinary NZ residential ISP connection, this website https://www.vh1.com/ explicitly says "Please also note that you are accessing a site which is designed for and targeted to U.S. audiences and is governed by and operated in accordance with U.S. laws." on the bottom banner probably intended in part for General Data Protection Regulation compliance. I did not look where the website is hosted as it didn't seem particularly relevant.

If I try to access from a UK or German VPN, I am redirected to their Facebook page with Facebook set to German but still the generic Facebook page. https://de-de.facebook.com/VH1/ Well I didn't investigate if this is one of those fancy auto country redirect Facebook pages, but other than the German interface it looks like a generic VH1 page probably mostly targeted at American audiences with shares etc in English. It's possible that Facebook didn't see my VPN in the same way, although I did access from private mode so it probably wasn't my login data that confused it.

Whatever the case a reminder perhaps that you can't assume what you see will be the same as what someone else sees especially when accessing from a different country.

In this particular case, while I can't speak for what you saw, for what I saw it looks to me mostly down to careless GDRP paranoia since as said, it simply redirects to Facebook with the German interface but a Facebook page that seems targeted at American audiences. I mean according to VH1 (UK & Ireland) they actually have a website https://www.mtv.co.uk/vh1 it would make more sense to direct UK audiences to anyway.

I'm not sure if they also have a website to direct audiences of the VH1 (European TV channel) to. Your comment seems to suggest they do, but I admit I find it suspicious they will have both some German website I didn't see, and that Facebook with German interface redirect. (At most, as said earlier maybe they do have a German targeted Facebook page that I didn't see.)
