February 24[edit]

Cinque Hommes Township, Perry County, Missouri[edit]

Hi,

Page is here.

Under "Etymology" on that page. It says that Cinque Hommes is French and I'm sure that's true. However, unless I'm badly misunderstanding something, modern conventional French spelling would have that as Cinq Hommes. I think some mention should be made if "Cinque" is a dialect spelling or an archaic one.

It certainly corresponds to an 'antique' spelling: c.f. Cinque ports. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 2.122.1.40 (talk) 18:00, 24 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Wiktionary:cinq says "English - alternative forms - cinque". Also, the source quoted in our article, Perry County Place Names, 1928-1945 says (scroll down about a third of the way to "Place name: Cape Cinque Hommes") that some of the early written uses of the name were by Spanish speakers, so perhaps they were more familiar with the Italian "cinque" as suggested in the Wiktionary entry. I have added this township to the Wikipedia Cinque disambiguation page, and the Wiktionary link for good measure. Alansplodge (talk) 20:54, 24 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. Again, a mention on the page linked that "cinque" might be archaic or a mistaken Italian spelling might be helpful. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.197.112.215 (talk) 18:34, 25 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

We'd need to reference it somehow. I'll have a bash later, unless somebody jumps in first. Alansplodge (talk) 19:14, 25 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
