March 2[edit]

What gun is this?[edit]

Hi all, the info on this (slightly cropped) photo from Battle of Yangxia (1911) and other articles says Rebels 3-inch gun under fire, probably Hangkow. Any ideas? MinorProphet (talk) 21:28, 2 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a reason why you think the caption is wrong and it is not a 3-inch gun? RudolfRed (talk) 22:08, 2 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
No, I'm going along with the caption, and wondering what type of 3-inch gun it is. MinorProphet (talk) 00:23, 3 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Doesn't appear to be any of the 3-inch guns which we have articles about. DuncanHill (talk) 23:32, 2 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, we have Category:76 mm artillery which may be worth ploughing through. DuncanHill (talk) 23:52, 2 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Potential answer from Axis History Forum: a post there says it is a Gruson 57mm QF gun (most probably copy from Hanyang Arsenal). This last article says that the revolutionaries raided the arsenal, which manufactured Gruson QF guns, equipping themselves with some 7,000 rifles, 5 million rounds, 150 pack guns and 2,000 shells. According to de:Grusonwerk, Gruson was taken over in 1893 by Krupp. Commons has Commons:Category:Cannone da 57/25 Gruson with pic on the right looking quite similar, with the thing looking like a sight on the side of the barrel and a similar elevating(?) wheel seen through the spokes. Another Gruson 5.7cm, but on a casemate mounting - similar sights and elevating wheel. [1] 57mm is about 2¼ inches, so the caption may be wrong, as RudolfRed intuited.
