Probably not, but only an Italian race official who is also American could tell for sure. It's not only about being black, but also about being from Black Africa. There have been several good riders from Algeria before, some actually born in France, but that's not Black Africa. There have been several good white South African riders and one very good white British-Kenyan rider. There have been a few decent black riders from the Caribbean (Kévin Reza comes to mind), but they are just from western countries like France. I don't think it's about history but about a breakthrough by a relatively unknown rider who is "revealed" to the World. Maybe it helps to have an unusual country or race for cycling but last year the winner was the Italian Lorenzo Fortunato.[2] PrimeHunter (talk) 05:44, 2 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

That does seem like a better interpretation of "revelation" in this context. More in general, something can be called "a revelation" if it proves to be hugely successful, where the success was not anticipated. "Terry Allen's new songs are a revelation at Paramount concert."^[3] "Great on record, hair-raising live, Not is a revelation, worth the price of admission alone."^[4] "Canada’s Lindsay Ell was a revelation at 2018’s Country Thunder Arizona, tearing it up on guitar in an afternoon set when the only song most people in attendance would’ve recognized was "Criminal," her breakthrough hit."^[5] Biniam Girmay has been called "a revelation" earlier this year for winning the Ghent–Wevelgem classic.^[6] One can dispute how unexpected his success in a stage of the Giro was, after he won this classic and also a silver medal in the U23 road race at the World Championships 2021,^[7] but his rise has undisputably been meteoric. --Lambiam 06:53, 2 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Similar awards are called "Rookie of the Year" (in North America) or "Newcomer of the Year" (British, e.g. Empire Award for Best Newcomer). "Revelation" is more of a European term (e.g. "Révélation de l'année" is used in French [8]). Xuxl (talk) 14:08, 2 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

These awards were awarded after a vote by the (mostly Italian) public, so no real rules, other than having had to participate. One other factor that cannot be ignored is that people (including the organisers) feel sorry about the way Girmay had to abandon the race: after winning his stage, he got the cork from the bottle of spumante in his eye.
