November 19[edit]

Small curiosity, thank you very much[edit]

Hello. I have a small curiosity to bring to your attention. I was watching the award ceremony of the 1974 Fifa World Cup final (soccer) between West Germany and the Netherlands. Maybe I saw it wrong, but no medals were awarded to either the winners or the losers, only the World Cup trophy to the German players. Perhaps the custom of giving medals was not there before, or am I mistaken? I thank you. 5.95.197.140 (talk) 19:13, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

According to The History of the FIFA World Cup Medal:
"The first FIFA World Cup was held in 1930, and at that time, medals were not awarded to the teams that participated. It wasn’t until the 1934 World Cup that medals were first given out."
Also, from Fifa World Cup: "Before the 1978 tournament, medals were only awarded to the eleven players on the pitch at the end of the final and the third-place match. In November 2007, FIFA announced that all members of World Cup-winning squads between 1930 and 1974 were to be retroactively awarded winners' medals."
It is likely that the video you watched simply omitted that part of the ceremony. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 51.241.161.192 (talk) 20:16, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Or that the medals were given out separately, and not during the main ceremony. Xuxl (talk) 16:40, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
