Is Giant magnetoresistance used before 1988 for manufacturing HDD?[edit]

I understand this Giant magnetoresistance is discovered in 1988 and play important role in HDD.

Hard disk drives were introduced in 1956. Their design has changed drastically over the years, and new discoveries made in 1988 could certainly have contributed to design changes since then. It is rather impossible that IBM used an effect before 1988 that was only developed in 1988. --Jayron 32 12:03, 1 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
