Alkoins[edit]

We know about alkanes; they have single bonds. Alkenes have double bonds and alkynes triple bonds. Is there any reason hydrocarbons with quadruple bonds don't exist?? Georgia guy (talk) 15:27, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Quoting the article on Quadruple bonds: "Quadruple bonds between atoms of main-group elements are unknown." "...a recent paper by S. Shaik et al. has suggested that a quadruple bond exists in diatomic carbon, but this is disputed." Its references should help answer your question. Modocc (talk) 15:52, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Consider the number of bonds the carbon atoms make in a hydrocarbon: four. If there's a quadruple bond somewhere, the carbon atoms on either side of the bond would have used up all their bonds already. That doesn't rule out quadruple bonds with S or P, but you asked about hydrocarbons. PiusImpavidus (talk) 11:51, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Murchison meteorite[edit]
