Wikipedia:Requests for feedback/2011 March 30

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The subject of the article is an author who is cited by other Wikipedia articles as a noted Arctic historian. I don't have a conflict of interest, since I never met the man in question. He died in 2009. However, I did contact the author of one of his obituaries to confirm some details. I have found credible published sources. This is my own original work.

Am leaving feedback on your talkpage --Physics is all gnomes (talk) 20:07, 30 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi this is my first article. I'd just like someone to give it a read for some feedback on whether you think the article is good enough for live Wikipedia. Thanks for your time

Couple issues: quoting directly from praising reviews makes the article seem more like promotion than an encyclopedic article. Check out some more established articles on musicians to get a feel for how music artist articles are written. Also, your footnotes are currently just evidence that he's played at X, Y, and Z concerts and venues, not really evidence supporting assertions in the article or proving notability. Please read Wikipedia:Notability (music) for some basic guidelines. MatthewVanitas (talk) 20:45, 30 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Is there anything that I can do to improve this article. It's about the Wereling Trilogy by Stephen Cole.

Shadow Wolf 001 (talk) 08:45, 30 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This looks pretty good. It could use in-text footnotes for the references. It could also be improved by adding more wiki links to the page. Jncraton (talk) 23:41, 30 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Article was expanded about 20x in prose, but I'd like to see where it can still use some improvement. I used the same layout as a couple of FA/FAC and it matches them pretty well, though some content (Music, Legacy, etc) isn't included as there frankly isn't much to include. The only thing that I see as missing is the fact that the cover has been a bit of a running joke on the internet, but it doesn't seem notable so I haven't included it. I need help with what type of citations I should add.... as a fairly new art Museum, there hasn't been a great deal written about us (other than newspapers, magazines and the like). Any recommendations as to what type of citations would be a good fit? Are newspapers and magazines considered "reliable" sources as citations?

74.95.26.153 (talk) 17:50, 30 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Newspapers and magazines do qualify, with the caveat WP:NOTNEWS. That is, when news media report facts of ongoing/historic interest, we use those, but not day-to-day nitty gritty. So if the newspaper reports "the museum was designed by Belgian architecht Andre Dechamre", that's citeable. But not "On Wednesday 8 March there was a wine and cheese tasting for the Renoir exhibit." All good? MatthewVanitas (talk) 17:53, 30 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to add this article to Wikipedia to further flesh out the list of Louisiana Defunct Railroads. This is my first article for Wikipedia, and feedback is much appreciated.

Looks solid and publishable overall, but you'll want to run your GoogleBooks links through this automatic citation generator and then paste them back in: RefTag. That'll make them a lot cleaner and more usable, and avoid the danger of WP:Link rot. On a minor sidenote, the way you were making wikilinks was odd and unnecessary; the only time you have to use the pipe (|) is when the phrase in the text does not direct to an article, but you had a bunch of redundant piped links for some reason. Scope this diff to see the changes I made: diff MatthewVanitas (talk) 19:48, 30 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

May I know if my article is ready to publish in wikipedia?? Ritwik C (talk) 18:58, 30 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The article has a lot of cleanup to be done, but a lot of that is just the learning process of Wikipedia. First off, please check out WP:FOOTNOTES for an explanation of how to create and use footnotes. What you need to do is take those Telegraph links you currently have at the bottom, and turn them into footnotes. Each time you make an assertion in the article, which is verifiable by one of the Telegraph articles, you want to add a footnote giving evidence to that specific point. You also need to add wikilinks, which is done by placing double-brackets around words: [[Germany]] --> Germany. Do not do these for simple common words ("book", "village", major countries that everyone knows like "India"), but do add wikilinks for the names of local places, important figures, languages, etc., but only on their first occurrence within the article. Try making those changes first, and then check in back here. MatthewVanitas (talk) 19:42, 30 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I was wondering how to upload a file of a picture of the Museum. When I try it says I am an unauthorized user. I don't know if this is because I created the account a couple days ago or what the issue is. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Jrazo (talk) 19:09, 30 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure what the upload issue is; are you logged into WikiCommons or are you trying to upload directly to Wikipedia? Are you familiar with the requirement that uploaded pics be Creative Commons (or similar Public Domain), and can't just be pics taken off Google? MatthewVanitas (talk) 19:37, 30 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Request for initial review. Please.

I just wrote this article about one of my favorite TV Personalities but I am not sure if I have met all of the guidelines. I just need help making sure it is in the proper format and meets all of the guidelines.

Chill8815 (talk) 20:32, 30 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A couple quick things: you provide references but do not have any footnotes to specific cited facts (see WP:FOOTNOTES). Further, it doesn't appear that most of your references meet WP:Reliable sources, being that they're mainly online fansites. I'm not familiar with what the best way is to document television actors, so I suggest you drop into the Talk page of Wikipedia:WikiProject Television to get some advice. MatthewVanitas (talk) 20:36, 30 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Kindly review my article and let me know if there any changes should be made. I've heard a lot of people talking about this company but no information can be easily found online even on the company website so I put together a brief article about it.
