Melville Library at Stony Brook University celebrates Open Access Week 2019! New and experienced Wikipedians are invited to join us for the Open Access Wikipedia Edit-a-thon taking place Thursday, October 24, 2019, 12:00 - 2:00 pm at Melville Library in Stony Brook, New York. This event seeks to celebrate open access by sharing information in the public commons through Wikipedia. At this event, editors will be encouraged to work on articles related to the Open Access Week theme "Open for Whom? Equity in Open Knowledge."

  • Date: Thursday, October 24, 2019
  • Time: 12:00pm - 2:00 pm
  • Location: Center for Scholarly Communication, Melville Library at Stony Brook University. 100 Nicolls Rd, Stony Brook, NY 11794. The Center is room C-2601 on the 2nd floor of the North Reading Room.
  • Theme: Open for Whom? Equity in Open Knowledge (Open Access Week 2019 theme)

Please bring a laptop with you!

  • Bring your laptop, power cord and ideas for entries that need updating or creation. We'll also have a few laptops on hand for participants to use during the live event.

We'll have a selection of print materials and sources on hand at the event.

  • We're going to get copies of some printed reference materials to have on hand at the event for participants to use during the live event.

Getting started[edit]

  1. If you do not have one already, create a Wikipedia account
  2. While logged into your Wikipedia account, please register as a participant in this event
  3. If you like, do online training, but try to use the event to make an edit to Wikipedia
  4. Identify a reliable source which is interesting
  5. Add information from that source to a Wikipedia article and cite your source
