The result of the discussion was merge to Template:Clickable button using the syntax from Clickable button 2 with the link optional Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 16:34, 26 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Propose merging Template:Clickable button with Template:Clickable button 2.

  • General support. There may be technical reasons these two templates have remained separate, in which case we'll need to consider those, but just prima facie, we ought to only need one template called "clickable button".   • Support They use different syntax but generate the buttons in the same way. I prefer version 2s way of doing things and it has more usage hence I suggest merging to button 2 but using the sensible name of course. --Trialpears (talk) 12:52, 18 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • support in theory as far as I can tell the main differences are (1) {{clickable button}} doesn't generate a link and {{clickable button 2}} always generates a link, and (2) {{clickable button}} uses |color= instead of |class=. fundamentally, I don't know why you would want the button unlinked, so those uses should probably be migrated to {{unlinked button}} or just {{button}} or something? or do we add a |nolink=y option?     An empty first parameter would be fine for no link I think, rather than adding another option. The documentation for {{clickable button}} says they often want to put it inside a link so migration of that usecase to Clickable button 2 would be the correct approach.   • Support merging to version 2
    1. The version 2 "Clickable button 2" was created by me as the version 1 needed manual addition of "[[ ]]" wikilinks, (and also to allow more customization options but that got removed later because of new mw-ui buttons).
    2. Note that when link is manually added for version 1, only the text is clickable, while for version 2 entire button area is always clickable
    3. Merging can be done safely using "Module:String", {{Str find}} and {{Replace}} to detect square "[" brackets, and switch or replace accordingly
    4. Another way is to make version 2 prominent and move version 1 to "Clickable button unlinked" or something like that. Rename version 2 to a good name and make version 1 a sub of it
    5. Clickable button should be "clickable" by default, i.e., link added by default. But sometimes, the unlinked version is also needed, e.g., if it has to transclude another template that adds link like {{fullurl}}- Vis M (talk) 18:43 & 15:20, 25 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
