Group 84B[edit]

This is a group page for the 410.602 Johns Hopkins Molecular Biology, section 84 course. This group will be working on the article TBD.

Gene Silencing[edit]

From what I can see, the page desperately needs inline citations. It has a references and a list of studiessection but there are no footnotes indicating which references are regarding which study and some of the studies have no references as all. I also feel that the subject could be vastly expanded up for clarity and completeness. Histone acetylation and deacetylation[edit]

This article has a generic image (of an acetyl group) which does not seem to really bring together the concepts illustrated in the text. It includes some citations, however the second half of the article is severely lacking in evidence; the citations included seem to be paraphrases, and others portions make assertions that are not necessarily common knowledge. Some in-text links to other articles for clarification could be added. Additionally, the entire article consists of a single section, which probably ignores the proposed MCB Style Guide.

Acetyltransferase[edit]

This article seems like it is merely a bunch of links to examples. The image included doesn’t explain what the enzyme does. Honestly this article doesn’t have very much work completed on it yet. The method of action for acetyltransferase needs to be added. Explanatory text also is a must.

Rationale for article choice[edit]

Transferase[edit]

As our first choice, gene silencing, had already been chosen by another group, we chose the Transferase article because both of us were interested in the action and biochemistry of this family of enzymes. Also, transferases are extremely important in many biological functions, so they definitely deserve a larger and more complete entry than the stub currently in place. While the topic Acetyltransferase may have been related, the scope available for Transferase should prove much more accessible and have a wider breadth of sources available for improving its quality.

Furthermore, the stub fails to address the history of discovery of important transferases, mechanisms by which important transferases act, as well as control methods for transferases. These additions can add some much needed depth and breadth to the article, as it currently is woefully lacking in ancillary data. Another necessary addition is the improvement of diagrams and imagery relating to transferase action. These images are necessary for improved understanding by visitors to the page. And without modifications such as those mentioned here, large amounts of information is being left out. Lastly, references must be improved and expanded as the article is changed. This, along with increased linking to other Wikipedia articles, will also improve the quality of this stub.

  • Added new section on biotechnology applications
  • Combined and eliminated a section, put into Transferase reactions section
  • Improved wikilinking, improved syntax, content edits, new citations
  • Changed History section to be per decade
  • Added equation to Donor/Acceptor in Transferase reactions section (Thanks Jim892!)

Next:

  • Need to add more images and diagrams
  • Add equations for each of the EC system transferases listed
  • Add nomenclature example for systematic naming
  • Tables?
  • Improve headings to be more informative
  • Add Terminal transferases to Biotech section
  • Find diagrams for some of the reactions listed (or make them)
  • Add Discovery of RNAP (RNA Polymerase) to history section?

Unit 14 Update[edit]

Completed since last update:

  • Added EC Reactions, Deficiencies, and Histo blood group sections; expanded history section
  • Added diagrams and images, equations for each reaction type
  • Improved citations
  • Made all changes (as far as I can tell) suggested by Neelix in previous review (includes removing duplicate wikilinks, heading fixes, removal of category links, captions added)
  • Attempted to address all changes suggested by others

Next/In progress:

  • Add section on mechanisms, regulation, and thermodynamics
  • Describe cofactors/add cofactors section
  • Structure: similarities between Transferases and Hydrolases

Overall changes to Transferase Article:

  • Extensive content additions
  • Improvements to references
  • Improved wikilinking
  • Addition of images and diagrams.
