Projects delivered

Strategic Goal 1

Increase the quality and quantity of coverage of subjects that are currently underrepresented on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects, with a particular focus on cultural content.

Outcomes

A suffragette on hunger strike being forcibly fed with a nasal tube

• Scheduled a Wikipedia Women in Red meetup for Friday 30 March 2018. While 8 signed up for it, unfortunately many cancelled at the last moment and no one attended in the end. In hindsight, not a good idea to hold an event on Good Friday, particularly after the conclusion of a long-running strike.
• Used the time to research and write a brand new 2000 word article on the important story of the suffragette Frances Gordon (aka Frances Graves and a distant relative of the war poet Robert Graves) who became prominent in the militant wing of the Scottish women's suffrage movement prior to the First World War and was imprisoned and force-fed for her actions.

Support the development of open knowledge in the UK, by increasing the understanding and recognition of the value of open knowledge and advocating for change at an organisational, sectoral and public policy level.

Outcomes

Crowds gather at a UCU strike rally in George Square, Glasgow.

• Submitted conference proposal for a Wikipedia Translation workshop at the second Celtic Knot: Wikipedia Language Conference hosted this year at the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth.
• Created a new Wikipedia article on the 2018 UK higher education strike on 12 March 2018.
• Successfully nominated the article for inclusion on Wikipedia's front page on their 'In the News' section where it was included with the passing of Stephen Hawking and the poisoning of Sergei Skripal.
• The page has now been viewed in excess of 41,000 times since its creation on 12 March 2018.

International Women's Day and Leeds UCU signs

Julia Prinsep Stephen, née Jackson, (7 February 1846 – 5 May 1895) was a celebrated English woman, noted for her beauty as a Pre-Raphaelite model and philanthropist. She was the wife of the agnostic biographer Leslie Stephen and mother of Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell, members of the Bloomsbury Group. Now thanks to the Translation Studies MSc students she has an article on German Wikipedia.

• New Wikimedia Commons category created for images and videos arising from the strike. 19 uploads so far.
• Made final arrangements with Sophie Nicholls, Head of Humanities at Teesside University, for the (Re)making Middlesbrough editathon event planned for 27-28 April 2018.
• Met with Mike Bennett and Gavin Willshaw to finalise the data model for importing the Thesis Collection data from the Edinburgh Research Archive into Wikidata. Made 154 edits to Wikidata to improve the modelling of theses in readyness for the import. Now the data model is fully agreed, we are just awaiting Mike finalising the new tool he has developed to help import from the ALMA library catalogue into Wikidata.

• Discussing with Hannah Evans at Wikimedia UK about the production of a new UK-based booklet of Wikipedia in the Classroom case studies.
• Supporting Gavin Willshaw, digital curator at the University of Edinburgh, to prepare for running his first Wikipedia editathon at Portobello Library on Saturday 14 April (rescheduled after heavy snowfall).
• Another iteration of the Wikipedia assignment in the Reproductive Biology Hons. course has been confirmed to go ahead in September 2018.
• Wikipedia editing assignment for the Global Health MSc course - postponed until October 2018 due to Felix Stein working in Haiti at the moment.

• A collaboration with Michael Seery at the School of Chemistry and the Royal Society of Chemistry to be confirmed.
• Ada Lovelace Day 2018 is confirmed as going ahead at the School of Chemistry again in October 2018; working with Michael Seery and Jenni Garden.
• Further monthly Women in Red meetup scheduled for 8 June 2018 to mark the Processions event on 10 June 2018; celebrating 100 years of votes for women, marches and bannermaking.
• Awaiting word from Sara Mortsell at Wikimedia Sweden about her plan to collaborate on a Wikipedia in Education knowledge sharing exercise between Wikimedia Sweden, Stockholm University, the University of Edinburgh and Tel Aviv University.
• (Re)Making Middlesbrough - Editathon and Train the Trainer event with Sophie Nicholls at Teeside University confirmed all organised for 27-28 April 2018.
• Law Society editathon arranged and to be led by law student Jemima John. This has been rescheduled for 15 May 2018 along with a collaboration on an article designed to provoke discussion of Wikipedia in the Law curriculum at a later date.
• Showcase 'Wiki Loves Libraries' event for SDLC and SLIC representatives still mooted - awaiting word from Kirsty Lingstadt (Head of Digital Library) and liaising with Gavin Willshaw, Digital Curator on date and format.
• Continuing to liaise with Gavin Willshaw and Mike Bennett at Library & University Collections on the import of thesis data to Wikidata from the Edinburgh Research Archive. Completed necessary preparatory work; just awaiting Mike finishing developing the tool that converts ALMA library catalogue data into a Wikidata-friendly import.
• Continuing to add more data to Wikidata from the Survey of Scottish Witchcraft database. More to be added at the Digital Day of Ideas event on 16 May 2018 for digital scholars working at the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.
• Liaising with Susan Ross, Gaelic Wikipedian at the National Library of Scotland, on a submission for the Gaelic Studies Conference at the University of Edinburgh next summer. Awaiting word on this from Susan.
• Three presentations prepared for the Open Educational Resources Conference (OER18) on 18-19 April 2018: Wikidata in the Classroom (lightning talk), Stories of Student Empowerment - Wikipedia in the Classroom (15 minute presentation) and an EdTech editathon workshop. Recording interviews with multiple staff and students over the course of this month.
