Adelaide Freeways and Highways[edit]

Adelaide's transport infrastructure comprises four freeways: the South Eastern Freeway (route M1), the Southern Expressway, the Port River Expressway and the Northern Expressway. The Northern Connector and South Road Superway are proposed developments.

South Eastern Freeway[edit]

The South Eastern Freeway (route M1) forms a part of Australia's National Highway, connecting Adelaide with Melbourne and Sydney. The freeway comprises three-lanes from its source (the intersection of Portrush Road, Cross Road and Glen Osmond Road at Glen Osmond, through to the Crafers exit. The freeway then continues as two lanes until Murray Bridge where the freeway terminates and becomes the Princes Highway (national route A1]].

Southern Expressway[edit]

The Southern Expressway is a fully-reversible one-way freeway south of the Adelaide CBD. The Southern Expressway always has a minimum of two lanes open with an emergency stopping lane, the speed limit is 100 km/h.

Port River Expressway[edit]

The Port River Expressway is the major road link between port and rail terminals at Port Adelaide and Port Wakefield Road (the National Highway).

Northern Expressway[edit]

The Northern Expressway is a proposed two-way freeway which will link the Sturt Highway with Port Wakefield Road. The project is a joint initiative of the South Australian and Australian Government under the AusLink program, the project is to be the largest in the state since the 1960s.
