Wikipedia:WikiProject Anthroponymy/External resources (popularity)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Name articles need to abide by the same requirements of verifiability that other articles on Wikipedia must. This page contains practical information on several external resources suitable for use as reliable sources in name articles, though the notion that these are reliable sources has not been subjected to stringent review by editors not affiliated with the Anthroponymy WikiProject. A pre-formatted citation template has been included with each resource listing to facilitate use of the source.

The listed external resources can be subdivided into two types of categorizations. One categorization has been used in the table of contents for this page - topic area. The second categorization axis is based on publisher, which will be described here at a future date.

Surname frequency[edit]

Argentina[edit]

From Abstract: "In order to study the isonymic structure of Argentina, the surname distributions of 22.6 million electors registered for the year 2001 were analyzed in the 24 districts (distritos) and 541 municipalities (municipios) of the country."
Availability: Abstract available free; manuscript available to subscribers.

France[edit]

This source does not have a firm date associated with it, but from the site in general I infer that the information is valid as of sometime in 2007. The frequency information is based on the surnames of people, millions, signed up for a particularly popular social networking site in France. It is no doubt skew in some way and does not have the official nature of a government statistical analysis.

Poland[edit]

The first resource provided here is apparently considered a valuable genealogical resource, providing counts of name instances both country-wide and in each of the official subdivisions of Poland extant in 1990. The strengths and weaknesses of the resource are addressed in the Usage Assistance links provided in the table.

The resource below is an extension of the resource linked above. Whereas the resource above relates details of each surname, the listing linked below places the surnames in rank-order context accompanied by country-wide counts from the main resource.
