January 30[edit]

01:51:15, 30 January 2018 review of submission by Adarrah[edit]

I have made revisions in the article to try to give it a more “formal tone” and a “neutral point of view.” However, I have been unable to determine what is meant by “wikilinks.” Nowhere have I found a reference to this.

I am baffled by the criticism that the article needs “a range of independent, reliable, published sources.” I have a total of 85 footnotes, which include references to the Schreiders in the New York Times, Time Magazine, The Nation, Christian Science Monitor, Saturday Evening Post, Washington Post, LA Times, The Explorers Club, as well as foreign language sources. I have many more sources than are found in most Wikipedia articles. It’s as if the reviewer was blind to this. I of course have also used references to the works published by the Schreiders. Surely if one were writing about Einstein it would be permissible to refer to Einstein’s writings.

It seems that the reviewers are finding difficulty with the first part of the article in which I deal at some length with the Schreiders’ first journey. In all, the Schreiders made seven major journeys – most were equal to the dangers and hazards of their first journey. With regard to their first journey, it appears that the reviewers would prefer a short blunt statement of fact, e.g., “The Schreiders travelled from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego.” Although this would be factually correct, it would not inform the readers about what was involved in this journey . . . that no one had ever done such a thing before – or afterwards as a matter of fact. What was so significant about this journey that it warranted Frank’s induction into the Explorers Club? It is for these reasons that I’ve dealt with it at some length. For the readers to appreciate what was involved I felt it was necessary to describe the preparations for the trip and then the various problems and dangers that they faced. Having done this for their first trip, I did not go into any detail with regard to their other trips, some of which were even more hazardous. For example, in their 24,000-mile journey following the trail of Alexander the Great, they almost perished in the Baluchistan desert in the identical way in which Alexander lost a third of his army. Ironically, such a journey was repeated by Michael Wood in 1998, more than 30 years after the Schreider trip; it was done with a large support team sponsored by the BBC, and the title of his publication was identical to that of the Schreiders, but nowhere in it does he even mention the previous Schreider trip. This was a gross omission and poor scholarship. Strangely, National Geographic did not launch a complaint.

What Frank and Helen Schreider managed to accomplish, all on their own without any support team and before GPS and modern technology, is worthy of being reported in Wikipedia. Such an entry is long overdue and I will keep submitting the article until it gets accepted.

After I completed my recent revisions, I submitted this article to a retired professor for his appraisal. This professor has five degrees, has written several books (one being a best-seller), and has written numerous academic articles. He considered this article to be well written, properly organized, and fully documented. In his opinion the article would be acceptable in any appropriate academic journal.

I would appreciate it if someone would go over this and advise me on what else I could do before I resubmit it.

Hi again @Adarrah:. I think the last editor declined the article for it's lack of Help:Wikilinks. They are actually used in the article, such as in the infobox for the article, where you say she is from Coalinga. Please see the help link on Wikilinks, but they should be used through your article, as you would see on any other article. Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 08:54, 30 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

How would I merge this draft page's history with the page created at Aparna Brielle? Thank you.
