(insert clever intro here)

WikiProject Cannabis has seen a general upward trend in readership in its articles, with a notable spike, particularly in articles focused on US-based cannabis issues, occurring around the American November 2016 elections (Pageview sampling of US cannabis articles)

While elections and unusual news coverage may drive some spikes in readership of cannabis articles, there is one date that reliably boosts the readership for WikiProject Cannabis: April 20th, known in cannabis culture as "420". While the origins of the term are disputed, the prevailing theory is that it arose at San Rafael High School in California in the 1970s, designating the meeting time "4:20pm" and later becoming a general slang term for a time to smoke cannabis. In the American system of dates, "4/20" is April the 20th, so as a calendar-based pun this day become a symbolic day to use cannabis, initially in the United States but now recognized globally.
