Description[edit]

This WikiProject would be dedicated to creating and improving articles related to electronic sports, including articles on professional gamers and teams as well as tournaments, leagues, and events. This would most likely be a child project of Wikipedia:WikiProject Video Games, though it should not simply be a task force of that project as the concept of an electronic sport is quite different from the concept of a video game. Why do you want to start a new group, instead of joining one of these existing groups?
Electronic sports have grown significantly in recent years, to the point where there are individual articles on gamers, casters, teams, leagues, and so on. Many of these are certainly a subset of WikiProject Video Games, but are at the same time distinct. I suggest that this project be started with the same rationale that projects like Wikipedia:WikiProject Halo or Wikipedia:WikiProject Xbox were created. There should be a WikiProject dedicated specifically to the creation and improvement of electronic sports articles.
Additionally, I have noticed that many of the articles in the categories linked above are stub-class or start-class. This further demonstrates that a WikiProject targeting these articles would be beneficial. —Entropy (talk) 22:18, 21 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  2. Moved to Oppose. I strongly support the creation of a Taskforce eSports within WikiProject Video Games. I wouldn't be more involved specifically than I am already with WP:VG articles. I do not believe a separate WikiProject to be necessary; although electronic sport is concept different from video games, not a single article an a topic related to eSports is unrelated to video games, thus the larger WikiProject overlaps with 100% of the proposed Taskforce. This is for the same reasons for which I support the Taskforce-conversion of WP:XBOX & WP:HALO (the former of which has recently been completed).   2. As others have already pointed out, a task force within WP:VG already exists. I would suggest the proposers simply focus on reviving that rather than going through the effort of creating a project, retagging and all the other related work.   • A comment regarding the argument that this project would overlap 100% with WP:VG-- I disagree to an extent, in that WP:VG focuses primarily on articles about video games and video game companies. Articles on professional gamers and competitions are less clearly related to WP:VG but would be well within the scope of WikiProject Electronic Sports. —Entropy (talk) 22:30, 21 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    eSports is generally defined as the competitive play of video games. While I understand that articles about eSports players and teams may be considered as having a more tenuous link to general video game articles, I see it that way: Sidney Crosby is closely related to his sport, Ice Hockey specifically, which is part of the overall scope of Sport. In the same vein, Fatal1ty is closely related to eSports, which is part of the overall scope of video games. You cannot be relevant to eSports without being relevant to video games, as eSports itself is a sub-topic of the larger element of video games. Salvidrim! ✉ 22:44, 21 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    The unfortunate fact is that Pro gaming used to be its own project. I can only assume that there was not enough interest to support it as a full project and so it was eventually moved underneath the WP:VG banner. --Izno (talk) 00:17, 22 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    2 years, which is rather monolithic in Internet time, but it is long past the ascendancy of the likes of Brood War, CS, DotA, and Melee. However, the point of a group isn't for the size of the topic, it's for the size of the number of people working on a particular topic. How large the topic itself is, or how popular the topic is, is irrelevant to getting good work done. This is particularly true for video games-related topics, as most people would rather be playing the video games in question than in documentation of said video games... --Izno (talk) 23:21, 22 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    Perhaps, but the number of people interested in improving eSports-related articles is no doubt proportional to the size of the eSports community, which has grown substantially with the release of games like Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty, as well as with Halo and Call of Duty tournaments, etc. —Entropy (talk) 03:30, 23 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • If there's any doubt as to whether there are enough people interested in contributing to an eSports WikiProject, I'm confident that there would be given the size of WP:VG. The reason the pro gaming taskforce became inactive appears to be lack of organization.     I strongly agree. In any case, I think we need people interested and willing to work out consensus and guidelines about eSports players/teams, specifically, as they're been a recurrent point of conflict in the past. As I don't plan on being directly involved, it would be my pleasure to help closing any discussions on the topic that would require an uninvolved party.
