Titles[edit]

Articles[edit]

The Winter Olympic Games-related articles are named according to one of the following six types of titles:

1. [Year] Winter Olympics
For articles describing each edition of the Winter Olympic Games (e.g. 1952 Winter Olympics);
2. [Sport] at the Winter Olympics
For articles describing the history and evolution of a specific Olympic sport at the Winter Olympic Games (e.g. Alpine skiing at the Winter Olympics);
3. [Country] at the Olympics
For articles describing the history and performance of a specific National Olympic Committee (NOC) at the Olympic Games (e.g. Norway at the Olympics);
4. [Country] at the [Year] Winter Olympics
For articles describing the performance of a specific NOC at a specific edition of the Winter Olympic Games (e.g. Norway at the 1952 Winter Olympics);
5. [Sport] at the [Year] Winter Olympics
For articles describing the global results in a specific sport at a specific edition of the Winter Olympic Games (e.g. Alpine skiing at the 1952 Winter Olympics);
6. [Sport] at the [Year] Winter Olympics – [Event]
For articles describing the results of a specific sport's event (if the sport has multiple events, e.g. speed skating) at a specific edition of the Winter Olympic Games (e.g. Alpine skiing at the 1952 Winter Olympics – Men's downhill).

The first three types are considered "main level" pages, meaning they are at the top of the page hierarchy and hold similar but independent ranks within the project. They are the "parent" articles from which the following two page types (4 & 5) are derived. The last type (6) derives from type 5 for multi-event sports/disciplines.

Templates[edit]

There are also many templates which help with the navigation between related Winter articles. These template pages are named in the following manner:

1. Template:[Sport] at the Winter Olympics
To navigate between per-Games articles of a specific Winter Olympic sport (e.g. Template:Alpine skiing at the Winter Olympics);
2. Template:Events at the [Year] Winter Olympics
To navigate between articles of all sports at a specific Winter Olympic Games edition (e.g. Template:Events at the 1952 Winter Olympics).

Progress tables[edit]

The following tables display the existing Winter Olympics-related articles and templates together with non-existing articles and templates that are planned to be created. This helps the WikiProject to assess its development, the current coverage and where work is still needed.

Notice that due to factual reasons, concerning the history of the Winter Olympic Games, some articles are not supposed to be created, even though a place for a possible article might appear in some of the tables (e.g. 1940 Winter Olympics opening ceremony).

Sports per Games[edit]

The table presents a full set of article series featuring the history and results of every Olympic sport (past and current) at each edition of the Winter Olympics. It shows type 1 articles in the top row, type 2 articles in a left-hand column, and type 5 articles in the table body.

The two sets of templates previously mentioned are also shown as linked "T"s. Those displayed in a column correspond to type 1 templates, while the ones displayed in a row correspond to type 2 templates. These templates are to be transcluded at the bottom of each page, for navigational purposes.

NOC per Games[edit]

The table presents several sequences of articles corresponding to every documented National Olympic Committee's participation history at the Winter Olympics. It shows type 3 articles in a left-hand column and type 5 articles in the table body.

NOCs are ordered by their attendance record — from the most attending NOCs at the top to the least attending ones at the bottom; if NOCs share attendance figures, they are ordered by alphabetical order. Historically related NOCs are shown grouped in between gray horizontal bars, while currently non-existing NOCs have their name in italics and in a light red background.

  1. ^ a b The Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, consisting of the Republic of Serbia and the Republic of Montenegro, participated at the Games since 1998. It was reconstituted as the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro in 2003. At the 1998 and 2002 Games, the nation was still designated Yugoslavia (YUG). The Serbia and Montenegro (SCG) designation and code were first used at the Winter Games in 2006.
  2. ^ a b c East and West Germany participated with a combined team, United Team of Germany
  3. ^ Chinese Taipei was designated Republic of China (ROC) in 1972 and 1976. In 1979, the IOC started to use Chinese Taipei to refer to this NOC, a compromise that was acceptable for the People's Republic of China to start participating in the Olympic Games.
  4. ^ India's athletes originally competed as Independent Olympic Participants and marched under the Olympic Flag during the opening ceremony due to the Indian Olympic Association's suspension. On 11 February, the Indian Olympic Association was reinstated and India's athletes were allowed the option to compete under their own flag from that time onward.
  5. ^ A single speed skater from Estonia was registered for the 1924 Winter Olympics but was later withdrawn. News did not reach the officials in time and so the flag was carried at the opening ceremony.
  6. ^ Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Russia, Ukraine and Uzbekistan participated as a combined Unified Team in 1992.
  7. ^ Anne Abernathy was the lone competitor from the Virgin Islands at the 2006 Winter Olympics, but withdrew from the women's luge event after injuring herself during a practice run.
  8. ^ Costa Rica did not take part in the Opening Ceremony of the 2002 Winter Olympics, but its athletes did compete; 78 nations participated in the 2002 Games, however the IOC web site states that 77 nations participated, probably erroneously not counting Costa Rica.
