How to setup Recognized Content listings for portals[edit]
Recently, a bunch of sub-optimal Recognized Content listings were removed from the talk page of several portals (which may or may not include this one), indicating there is a lack of understanding about how the system works (see WP:RECOG for details). In a nutshell, the system should ideally be used to create listings on the main page of the portal, either directly, or via transclusions.
The typical setup is to create Portal:Foobar/Recognized content, and add

|template = WikiProject Foobar <!-- Or whatever associated WikiProject is relevant -->
|content-featured-articles
|content-good-articles
|content-featured-pictures
|content-former-featured-pictures
|content-valued-pictures
|columns = 3

This will create a listing similar to Wikipedia:WikiProject Physics/Recognized content. The system can handle Did You Know, In the News, Vital articles and a slew of other high-profile articles if desired (see WP:RECOG for details), or have individual separate listings for featured articles, good articles, featured listed, etc. Such a listing of articles, which is kept up-to-date by the bot, can be used to generate a slideshow using {{Transclude list item excerpts as random slideshow}}. For example,
{{Transclude list item excerpts as random slideshow |1=Portal:The arts/Recognized content |paragraphs=1-2 |files=1 |limit=15 |more=Full article...}}
generates the "Featured article" section at Portal:The arts.
You can also create a separate Portal:Foobar/Did you know page to show the most recent blurbs, with

This will create a listing similar to Wikipedia:WikiProject Physics/Did you know. After these pages are created, you can translude them on the Portal page by including {{Portal:Foobar/Recognized content}} and {{Portal:Foobar/Did you know}} where you want these listings displayed.
