Assignment 1: Due November 2[edit]

  1. Complete readings on OnCourse and come to the lecture with good questions for Liam and Adrianne.
  2. Create your userpage: Use the WSPA Beginners Page to get started.
    1. As laid out on the Beginner's page, be sure to Add a Userbox to your userpage to identify yourself as part of the Wikipedia Saves Public Art project.
  3. Add to your userpage: List at least 3 of your research interests or hobbies.
    1. Create internal links to your interests.
  4. Review the articles: Visit the articles of the interests you included in your userpage.
    1. Check the Talk Page of each article.
    2. Choose at least one article and contribute to the discussion on the talk page. Make a suggestion to one talk page of one article; provide a reference, pose a research question, answer a question, or post a new discussion or question that arose as you were reading the article.
  5. Watch the articles: Add these articles to your WatchList by clicking the star.
    1. It's a good idea to also Watch this page and associated WSPA pages.
  6. Read this and this.
    1. Go to Wikimedia Commons and chose at least one image from the Brooklyn Museum’s donation and add it to your user page. (See the Cheatsheet for the WikiMarkup for adding images.)

Assignment 2: Due November 9[edit]

  1. Complete readings on OnCourse
  2. Review the IUPUI Public Art Collection
    1. Read the main article.
    2. At the bottom of the page, click "Show" on the blue Navigation box that says "IUPUI Public Art Collection."
    3. Choose 12 of the sculpture articles to visit. Compare them. Completely read through at least 2 articles.
  3. Read Welcome to Wikipedia: This guide, developed by the Wikimedia Foundation, is a good overview for getting started.
    1. Make sure you understand the basics outlined in the guide.
    2. Use the guide to help with the rest of this assignment, including creating a sandbox.
  4. Create a /Sandbox: On your userpage, create a link for a sandbox named “Wikipedia Thoughts” (or something else).
    1. Don't forget this tutorial on creating a sandbox, which is included in the Beginners page.
  5. Reflect on your experience: Using your sandbox, reflect on your experience so far.
    1. This week, these should be personal reflections on the IUPUI Public Art Collection. Though throughout the remaining weeks your reflections should also be evaluative of the entire Wikipedia Saves Public Art project as you utilize its resources.

Assignment 3: Due November 16[edit]

  1. Find an already existing Wikipedia article about a public artwork.
    1. Try to choose an artwork in your hometown or nearest city.
    2. Compare it to Cloud Gate, a Wikipedia FA.
  2. Using the WSPA Style Guide, clean up the article.
    1. Research some additional information about the sculpture and update the article.
    2. Review the WSPA Style Guide & the tutorial.
    3. Make at least 5 edits to the article: adding categories or internal links, adding or fixing references, updating or adding an infobox, clarifying headings or grammar, or adding text.
  3. Reflect on your experience on your “Wikipedia Thoughts” sandbox.
    1. Consider the following: What is the Assessed Quality of the article (if any)? Does it have tags How good are the references? How clearly laid out are the headings? On a scale from 1 to 10, how much did you personally trust the information in the article? Why?

Assignment 4: Due November 23[edit]

(Field Day - No Class)

  1. Create a /Sandbox “Sculpture Draft” using the WSPA Template.
  2. Begin to draft your article, filling in the template with information you have thus far.
    1. Remember to use the WSPA Style Guide when filling out your article.

Assignment 5: Due November 30[edit]

  1. Upload at least 6 photos of your artwork to Flickr. Make sure that they are all labeled correctly, using our Flickr Guidelines.
  2. Make articles LIVE It’s not expected that they’ll be complete.
    1. Add the following template to your article's talk page: {{EducationalAssignment}}
    2. If your article is a stub, add the following template to the bottom of the article (not the talk page): {{sculpture-stub}}.
  3. Using the WSPA Image Guide, add the primary image to your Wikipedia article.
    1. Flesh out articles with templates, categories, and adding to the infobox, if needed.
  4. Update the List of public art at the Indiana Statehouse with links to your articles.
  5. Reflect on your experience in your "Wikipedia Thoughts" sandbox.

Assignment 6: Due December 7[edit]

  • Complete articles due by class time.
  • Half of class to present articles and a summary of their reflections on the WSPA process.

Final project evaluation paper: Due December 14[edit]

  • Final Paper due at start of class. Please e-mail the file to Richard directly.
  • Half of class to present articles and a summary of their reflections on the WSPA process.
