Wikipedia:WikiProject Sailor Moon/Sailor Moon side stories

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Sailor Moon side stories are short stories that take place in the universe of the Sailor Moon metaseries without fitting into its main narrative. They feature the same characters as the rest of the series, and the events that take place are generally (but not always) compatible with canonical events.

Side stories appear in both the manga and anime series, in the form of omake and TV specials.

In the manga[edit]

The omake of the manga were published alongside the main series in the 1990s, sometimes in Nakayoshi and other times in Kodansha's Run Run magazine. They were collected together with the main story, appearing in the back of whatever volume was next to be published. With the reprint of the manga series nearly a decade later, all the short stories were collected together into the two-volume Story Collection, which went to print in Summer 2004.

In the anime[edit]

Aside from its three theatrical films (R, S, and SuperS), the Sailor Moon anime produced several specials. Some were made to accompany the movies, and others played independently on television.

There have also been "memorials" for each series within the anime: Sailor Moon Memorial, Sailor Moon R Memorial, Sailor Moon S Memorial, Sailor Moon SuperS Memorial, and Sailor Stars Memorial.

The SuperS Special[edit]

This special three-part episode premiered on Japanese television on April 8, 1995, and was never officially released into the English-speaking market. The story most likely takes place in the middle of the SuperS series; memories from the previous three series are discussed, and the joint transformation sequence that Usagi and Chibiusa use in SuperS is shown in the third part of the special, Chibiusa's Adventure.

An Elegant Metamorphosis? Crybaby Usagi's Growth Diary[edit]

This mini-episode is a recap on how Usagi became Sailor Moon and the different story arcs so far. Usagi and Chibiusa are at a park with Artemis and Luna, complementing themselves on their new transformation brooches. When asked about Usagi's life before Chibiusa came, Luna recalls giving Usagi her first brooch, and the awkward fight against her first monster. Usagi becomes very flustered and embarrassed. Different memories are exchanged, from the battle against Queen Beryl to Chibiusa's appearance in the 20th century right up to the defeat of the Death Busters. Luna then wonders what Haruka and Michiru are doing since they parted ways with the rest of the group, and Usagi and Chibiusa grin knowingly.

The Return of Haruka and Michiru! The Ghostly Puppet Show[edit]

The mini-episode begins with a dummy and a man sitting alone in a room. The dummy complains that he is hungry, and the man says that they will have to have better manners than that. The scene then changes to a resort by the sea. In the dining hall, the same man and dummy share a story about the Spirit Sealing bottle the dummy has. Michiru is in the same room, eating dinner. When Michiru leaves the hall, the man smiles menacingly.

Haruka is sick and in bed. A maid is tending to her, and Haruka flirts with her. However, an entrance by Michiru leaves them both flustered, and the maid leaves the room. Michiru chides Haruka for her flirtatious behaviour and the two talk about a threat they sense. However, they are being observed by the man and the dummy. When the maid who was tending to Haruka appears to get dinner for her in the hall, she screams at the scene before her, as all the guest are unconscious. The man smiles again and replies that young ladies shouldn't scream.

Michiru is observing the seaside. The maid reppears, and after some brief conversation, Michiru looks back at the sea. The maid then starts stranggling her, but Michiru manages to disable the maid. She then notices the Dead Moon symbol on the maid, and hears Haruka screaming. She transforms, and the scene changes to Haruka, who is bound to the wall. The man and the dummy is observing her, noting its a threat they cannot let go. Haruka tries to transform, but a sudden blur of vision makes her Lip Rod drop. The man and the dummy starts to devour her energy, but Sailor Neptune appears. The man states that she cannot attack him, or else the Spirit Sealing Bottle will break and all the shadows of each person will attack. Neptune uses Deep Submerge anyway, breaking the bottle. The man asks how Neptune knew he was lying and she replies she didn't and he misunderstood, as a world without Haruka isn't worth protecting. Haruka proceeds to transfrom, and attacks the dummy. The spell on the man and maid disappears, and all the hotel guest awakes.

Later on, on a hill observing the resort, Haruka looks at the fragment of the dummy she picked up, wondering who the new enemy is. Michiru reassures her that the Sailor Moon and the Guardian Senshi will take care of the world. Haruka silently agrees with her.

Make Up! Sailor Senshi[edit]

Shown immediately before the Sailor Moon R movie in theatres, this 15-minute short was a recap of the series to date.

In it, Usagi and Chibiusa overhear two girls talking about the Sailor Senshi after they see a poster. As the girls discuss which is the smartest, most elegant, strongest, and the leader of the Senshi, Usagi grandly claims those titles for herself. Chibiusa shakes her head at Usagi's delusion. Clips are shown from the debut of each Sailor Senshi, and that girl's image song is played in the background. When even Tuxedo Mask has been mentioned, and the girls are about to leave, Usagi butts in on their conversation and asks them directly about Sailor Moon. The girls give a series of glowing compliments about Sailor Moon, but unlike they did for the other Senshi, they also list her faults. After the girls leave, Usagi sarcastically apologises for being a clumsy cry-baby and then bursts into exaggerated tears.

Dreaming Moon[edit]

Dreaming Moon was a live-action special event featuring the five voice actresses who played the Inner Senshi, which took place on December 25, 1993. In order to see this event, fans had to enter various contests to win one of only 700 tickets.

At the event, the actresses performed various Christmas songs as well as "Moon Revenge," "Moonlight Densetsu," and other songs from the anime series, and also participated in a question-and-answer session. Attendees also got to see a special advance screening of the "Make up! Sailor Senshi" special and the Sailor Moon R movie.
