Winter Holiday Editing Adventure

This winter season, we are encouraging participants to explore different small editing tasks by adopting a WikiFauna persona. WikiFauna are a list of mythical creatures that perform specific roles and editing tasks on Wikipedia. They were developed as a fun way to engage with the myriad contributions that exist to Wikipedia editors.

We have developed an editing adventure related to three distinct WikiFauna personas. Get in character as one of the WikiFauna personas (i.e. WikiElf, WikiFairy, or WikiHobbit) and try out each editing mission. We encourage you to try it out with friends and family this holiday season. Start by signing in or creating an account and clicking the button below to sign in to the editing adventure. This will allow us to track your progress, offer specific tips and tricks, and congratulate you when you finish!

Get started[edit]

After signing in or creating an account and signing in to our event dashboard, complete these steps to begin your adventure:

Step One: Peruse the WikiFauna missions and select a persona you'd like to explore.

Step Three: Start your journey by completing each mission listed under your preferred WikiFauna persona.

WikiFauna missions[edit]

WikiElf[edit]

WikiElves enjoy the behind the scenes work on Wikipedia. They often work on organization, classification, and navigation areas within the encyclopedia.

Missions:

WikiFairy[edit]

WikiFairies enjoy beautifying Wikipedia by organizing messy articles and improving style. They like cleaning up confusing footnotes or references, standardizing format, or by organizing images for balance.

Missions:

WikiHobbit[edit]

WikiHobbits enjoy improving and creating high quality articles with reliable sources. They like to double-check--and even triple-check--that all their citations come from independent, secondary sources that are acceptable on Wikipedia, to avoid any potential interactions with more outgoing editors.

Missions:

  • Add five citations to articles with information that is lacking reliable independent secondary sources
  • Add a few links to the external links section of an article
  • Review a pre-existing article for reliability and accuracy and post a talk page message suggesting additions or revisions to sourcing
  • Draft a new stub or start class article with ten or more reliable references

Recommended articles[edit]

If you are not sure what articles to explore during your missions, below are a few recommendations.

1. Make small edits to the article on Writing. It is a vital article, meaning it is a high-impact article in need of edits to ensure high content and quality standards.

2. Check out our corwdsourced article lists for a variety of articles in need of edits and creation.

3. Review our past spotlights for a list of field-specific articles in need of edits and creation.
