The course is supposed to be the final composition course that students take in a sequence during their junior year. Students have had 1st-year composition and introductory courses in their majors. I am focusing on an area in my scholarly expertise (American literature before 1900) to expose them to scholarly inquiry and rigor. We will read three novel-length books (a captivity narrative, an early American frontier novel, and The Last of the Mohicans); students will learn about different representations of the American frontier; students will access critical secondary articles about the frontier and learn about authoritative sources and research.

The class is made up of approximately 50% native English speakers, and approximately 50% non-native speakers from North- and South-Pacific Polynesia, the Philippines, Japan, Mongolia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, China, and Taiwan. The students should be conversant in academic English, but some second-language acquisition difficulties may exist.
