This course is intended to introduce students to key historical issues and debates about women, gender, the family, and sexuality in the Middle East from the rise of Islam in the 7th century to the present day. Readings, lectures, and discussions will cover topics including Islamic law (shari’a), same-sex relations, the myth and reality of the harem, colonialism and decolonization, gendered national identities, and the impact of globalization and modern politics on gender and sexual identities.

Students will apply what they learn in the classroom towards combatting stereotypes, misinformation, and gaps in public knowledge by editing relevant pages on Wikipedia.
