There are common learning outcomes across all sections of PSY101, which I will list here:
- Review and analyze major theories, concepts and topics of interest to psychologists and students.
- Critically evaluate research strategies and findings of psychologists in their study of behavior and mental processes.
- Examine human behavior to gain a better understanding of oneself and others.
- Assess psychological findings in order to increase individual awareness and understanding of relevant social and contextual concerns.
- Apply communication skills, both written and oral, in appraising and presenting psychological issues.
- Compare cross-cultural differences and their influence on human interaction.
In my section, in particular, I work diligently to ensure that students understand and appreciate how the course content operates in the 'real world'; and, more importantly for their future personal and professional lives, how this intersects with their own lived experience. Psychology is fundamentally the study of the human condition, so it is important that students be able to contextualize the content. It is equally important that they understand what is truly applicable and what is misuse or misunderstandings related to psychology content. Said another way, they need to develop information literacy, which is specific to human growth and development within psychology, making it incredibly important. Its universally applicable - to all students, everywhere! That said, I do address cultural awareness, competency, and appreciation in my section to ensure all students are represented and able to engage fully in the course. Also, so all students recognize the nuances of lived experiences across themselves and those around them.
