What is “feminist theory?” What are the reasons that theories emerge, gain societal traction, disappear, reappear and/or change? How and why are theories reactions to and products of the very ideas and paradigms they contest? What does “liberation” look like and how can theories be tools for achieving it? Together we define key terms, concepts, and methods of the field. We use theory to intersectionally analyze how and why identities are central to the work of institutions and systems such as families, media, healthcare, prisons, and social services. As representation is a key element of feminist theory, we engage in the process of knowledge making through our Wikipedia assignment. Students create or revise content on Wikipedia that connects to key themes of our course. In turn, we reflect on the possibilities and challenges of making knowledge accessible.
