Through this wiki-edit-a-thon, we aim to combat racial and gender bias on Wikipedia by contributing biographies on scientists from underrepresented groups (URG) in Chemistry and Physics. This edit-a-thon is designed for a one hour commitment each week throughout the Fall 2022 semester. However you may proceed through the prescribed activities at your own pace. The goal is for each person to add a new article, or make substantial improvements on an existing article, about a scientist from one or more of the URG in chemistry and physics.

Dr. Kathryn Haas is leading this edit-a-thon and is available through Slack. She can help with questions about this specific project, like "can I choose someone who's not on our course list?" or "where can I find a reliable citation for this person's award?".

And, we have been assigned a Wikipedia Expert to help with any wikipedia-related questions you have along the way. You can reach them through the Get Help button at the top of this page.

Assignment - Choose your article, begin evaluating it.

Choose an article, then read it. What can improve the article?

  • Does it need to be updated?
  • Does it need copyediting?
  • Could links be added?

If the article itself has little room for improvement, another important improvement you can make is by linking other articles to it.

  • Has this person's work been mentioned in articles on scientific topics in theif field? And if not, should they have been mentioned?
  • Are they mentioned in other Wikipedia sites (ie German Wikipedia)? And if so, are there pages that might be translated to English and linked to the article?
