What do environmental issues have to do with issues of race, and vice versa? This course explores how closely these issues are related in the United States by actively engaging with this vibrant area of environmental research and action. We’ll consider topics such as: if, and how, different racial groups’ have varying cultural beliefs about, and approaches towards the natural world; historical roots and legacies that shape the predominance of whiteness in the US mainstream environmental movement; as well as the creation and function of environmental justice movements. I envision the Wikipedia assignment involving a final project that is group optional and encourages students to create a single page focused on a single census racial group. I.e., Asian Americans and Environmentalism in the U.S., Native American and Environmentalism in the U.S. etc. Each page, I hope will be consist of sections such as:

  1. Asian Americans connection to the Environment 1.1. Current attitudes towards the environment across Asian American groups. 1.2. Different Asian American groups and histories of immigration and professional occupations. (e.g., Chinese railroad laborers, Japanese farmers etc.)
  2. Environmental Exclusion and Access (e.g, Hmong Farmers in Minnesota; Japanese WWII intern camp gardens; etc.)
  3. Asian American Environmentalists
  4. Contemporary Environmental Movements and Organizations led by Asian Americans

I appreciate ideas and thoughts from the Wikipedia team on this assignment idea.
