Since the late nineteenth century, communities of artists and critics have defined themselves in opposition to the dominant forms of maleness and heterosexuality. This course examines the definitions of 'homosexuality' and 'feminism,' and traces their development in and influence on the visual arts. The Wikipedia assignment asks students to imagine they're hired as consultants for a major museum to improve the public's knowledge on women and/or LGBTQAI2S+ artists, in advance of an exhibition. Their task is to assess an article for the quality of its sources and content and then research, write, and improve it.
