In this introductory course, students will examine and critique how information, misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation proliferate through online social technologies, like websites, social media, and private messaging apps.

We will explore the information, problem-solving, and decision-making models used by machines and how they help construct or distort “reality”. We will analyze how to identify and leverage facts, authoritative information, and expertise to help counter conspiracy theories perpetuated by everyday technologies (think: search engines) and advanced technologies (think: deep fakes).

In the Wikipedia co-editing project (30% of final grade), students will work in small teams to identify, research, and edit an existing article to incorporate missing information on how discrimination, exclusion, injustice, and bias are exacerbated by sociotechnical systems. Student teams will collectively focus on one aspect of technically mediated disinformation, such as memes, deep fakes, search engines, automated content moderation algorithms, etc.
