In this course we explore key sociological concepts and theories on race and ethnicity. We seek to develop a historic and reflexive awareness of race, ethnicity, and racism in the United States, with some exposure to race relations in Latin America. We will explore how race and ethnicity intersect with class, gender, and ability, as well as with economic, political, and social phenomena. Students will gain a keen understanding of the way race and ethnicity impacts people at the personal, institutional, and societal level. Students will acquire the tools to think through their role in the making of race/ethnic relations in the United States. This course is at the introductory to intermediate level.
