We will look at the emergence of a feminist art practice. Starting with feminist art from the 1960s (concurrent with the Civil Rights movement and second wave feminism), we will consider how these practices have evolved through the present. Feminist art practices emerged alongside the Civil Rights movement and second wave feminism in the 1960s and have evolved with the changing roles and rights of women in society. While the focus in the 1960s will be on artists practicing in the U.S.A. and Western Europe, we will learn about how the field has broadened at the international level in contemporary times. Concerns with and awareness of intersectionality have become more central to the art practices and the conversations surrounding feminist art, and we will look at how artists, galleries, museums, and critics have begun to address the complexity of feminism. The course will also consider the connections between "women's issues" and more global concerns, including sustainability and human rights. Weekly Topics
