This course examines the obstacles women in Latin America still face in entering decision-making spaces in politics, the state, civil society, and the private sector and the resilience and creativity they show on a daily basis to counteract such patterns of exclusion. We will look at their participation in the diverse feminist and women's movements and the alliances they have built with the LGTBQ+ community, workers, Indigenous, and Afro-descendants movements in the region as well as with allies in national and local governments and international organizations.
We will be answering questions such as: Who are the main theorists who can help us understand the ways in which women enter or are excluded from exercising power in Latin America? What are the historical reasons why power is defined around difference and hierarchy? How do Latin American states define rights and citizenship? What has been the impact of organized women’s movements (feminist, anti-feminist, conservative, leftist, etc.) on defining power? Why, after more than a century of women’s mobilization, is it that, on average, Latin American women still make less than men and have less access to financial and other resources even though they are equally or even more educated than their male peers? What is the situation of Indigenous and Afro-Latin women in the region? Why and how are women and the LGBTQ+ community fighting for their rights and against the violence they face? How can we apply the framework of intersectionality (if at all) to these situations in the Latin American context? What are the creative solutions feminist and LGBTQ+ movements, governments, and international actors have generated and/or implemented in the region? What about the backlash against “gender ideology?”
