This course surveys the art and architecture of the early medieval period in Europe and the Mediterranean. This era opens with the advent of Christianity, and explores topics such as early Christian catacombs, the Book of Kells, and the art of the Migrant Peoples such as the Vikings. We will look at a richly diverse range of material created in places from Syria to Ireland in order to consider basic questions about the philosophy and theology of art, the social context of art and the analysis of gender and class in visual culture.
