- Choosing an LGBTQ+ stub article
For your final assignment for the course, we are asking you to develop a Wikipedia article. However, developing a Wikipedia article from scratch can be very daunting! Instead, we will ask you to choose an existing stub article, or an article which is too short to constitute a full entry. This week you will be asked to identify the stub article that you would like to work on improving throughout this class. We have compiled the following resources that will help give you some ideas. Look through them, and think about which stub article you would like to choose for your final project. Ideally, the stub will be about an issue, person, or organization we are learning about in the course.
Things to think about when choosing an article:
- Can you find sources about this? A well-constructed Wikipedia article will include sources to verify the information that it contains. Can you find good, credible sources about this topic?
- Are you interested in it? We hope that you will find something interesting to you to research!
Do not choose these article types:
- Lists (for example, List of androgynous people)

You will select your article this week as part of the "Choose your article" exercise below. You can also use the methods from the "Finding your article" section to locate a relevant LGBTQ+ stub article. Please choose your article (or a few potential articles) before February 16 so that your instructors can provide feedback.

Notes:
The Finding Your Article section will advise you to avoid controversial topics. However, you might note that topics like "LGBT rights" are on Wikipedia's list of controversial topics! This does not mean that all LGBTQ+ content on Wikipedia will be controversial (although some will, due to the nature of the open editing process). Instead, it means that the editing history for those particular articles has been particularly contentious. There are hundreds of pages of edits to the LGBT rights page, for example. This means that many, many editors are working on these articles, and will be quick to argue about or undo changes that are made. Let's not start in this more difficult editing scenario.
In the Choose your article training, please disregard the Writing a New Article section (page 2 of 4). All students in this course will be improving stub articles.
The Choose Your Article training will link you to your Article Selection page on Wikipedia. This is where you will list potential stub articles which you might choose to improve. To see an example, please see my Article Selection page where I have begun to investigate potential stub articles.
