The course concentrates on particular insights through examining literature from a cross-cultural perspective. Questions of genre, period and cultural relativism may be examined through primary texts drawn from two or more language traditions. With my multilingual group of students, these languages usually include English, Arabic, French, and Armenian.
In this particular section, I plan to focus on mixed modalities, allowing students to compare 'literature' without borders. The course will cover three broad themes related to current topics in comparative literature: race and culture; narratives of hope; and literary suffering. Under each of these sub-themes, students will read a diverse number of texts which include poetry, short stories, and plays; however, these will be discussed alongside other modes of expression which include 'talks', memes, and social media pages that rely on narratives/story-telling.
For each sub-theme, groups of students will review academic articles and literary sources (in addition to the ones provided for the class) to synthesize material relevant to the topic and write a summative research paper. This will be done via Wikipedia Education, offering an opportunity for students to upload their work and share with a larger audience. This would also help broaden the current information available on Wikipedia relating to comparative literature.
