The history of media in Chicago is largely unwritten. Yet, the city has been home to generations of aesthetically and socially radical moving image artists whose work has played a profound role in the development of artistic and commercial moving image. Students in this class will help uncover
Chicago's media history. In this assignment, students will edit entries created by previous iterations of this course, contributing to a better understanding of the city's major artists, makers, and media making entities.

In class - Discussion

Evaluating and editing your article -- what's needed to make it a good article?  More research to  find missing information and address content gaps? Rewriting the lead section to represent all the article's major points?  Reorganizing the text to communicate the information better? Adding images and other media? Deleting unnecessary material that does not follow Wikipedia standards?

Week 6

Course meetings
Tuesday, 5 March 2019
Assignment - Peer review your assigned article

For this assignment, you should provide a in-depth edit and copy-edit. Make your copy-edits directly in the article itself. Leave your editorial suggestions in the talk pages of the article you are reviewing.

When reviewing your article, ask yourself:

  • Does the article have enough sources and citations (Wikipedia suggests an average of one citation per sentence)?
  • Does the article have any glaring content gaps? Does it seem complete or does it need more information?
  • Is the article well organized?
  • Is the lead section a concise overview of the article's subject? (For example, from Wikipedia "The lead should stand on its own as a concise overview of the article's topic. It should identify the topic, establish context, explain why the topic is notable, and summarize the most important points. The notability of the article's subject is usually established in the first few sentences.")

You will be graded on you engagement with your assigned article and thoroughness of your edit.

Milestones

Every student has finished reviewing their assigned articles, making sure that every article has been reviewed.

Week 7

Course meetings
Tuesday, 12 March 2019
Assignment - Respond to your peer review

You probably have some feedback from other students and possibly other Wikipedians. Consider their suggestions, decide whether it makes your work more accurate and complete, and edit your draft to make those changes.

Resources:

  • Editing Wikipedia, pages 12 and 14
  • Reach out to your Wikipedia Expert if you have any questions.
Assignment - Continue improving your article

Exercise

Add links to your article

Now's the time to revisit your text and refine your work. What else needs to be done to make this a good article? Check your bibliography, lead section, and copy edit. Make sure your edits and contributions match Wikipedia's tone and standards. Remember to contact your Wikipedia Expert at any time if you need further help!

Assignment - Begin moving your work to Wikipedia

Now that you've improved your draft based on others' feedback, it's time to move your work live - to the "mainspace."

Resource: Editing Wikipedia, page 13

Assignment - Final article

It's the final week to develop your article.

  • Read Editing Wikipedia page 15 to review a final check-list before completing your assignment.
  • Don't forget that you can ask for help from your Wikipedia Expert at any time!
Milestones

Everyone should have finished all of the work they'll do on Wikipedia, and be ready for grading.
