In this seminar you will learn a lot about modern Japanese history, and you will do this mainly by engaging with Wikipedia, a free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit. You first choose a topic of modern Japanese history that interests you, collect/read scholarly works on your topic, and write/edit a few Wikipedia page on your topic. Afterwards, someone in the Wikipedia community may dispute or make suggestions on your contributions, to which you are expected to respond responsibly and constructively. Your contributions may not get much attention from other Wiki editors, but that is totally ok and will not affect your final grade negatively. You will be graded based on your own commitment to learning.

Feeling nervous about this learning method rather uncommon to college classes? Please don’t worry! While you will make your own unique contributions to Wikipedia, you are not going to do all this alone. Wikipedia offers great resources to help you oriented in the world of Wiki editing, and we will also work closely with the staff of our University library. What’s more, you and your classmates will help each other. And, of course, I will help you every step of the way.

By editing Wikipedia, we will deepen our own knowledge of modern Japanese history. We will also think deeply about different processes of production of historical knowledge. Anyone who wants to do these things are welcome to this course.

This course is the first half of your yearlong research project. In this course ("Seminar I"), you will learn about a topic of your choice via Wikipedia editing. Next semester ("Seminar II"), you will do your own research and write an original paper.

Your Topics and Access to Sources (2

We're going to meet via Zoom at 2:50pm on Th. 5/14. The link and password for this meeting will be emailed to you directly.


Before we meet, please complete the following activities:

  1. Take the training above. I understand you took it last week already, but I believe you can gain new information now that we discussed your potential topics in our indivisual meetings. This training session contains tips that help you find a Wikipedia article that needs your attention and editing, so I suggest you try one or some of these methods to narrow down/find the right topics for you. During the individual session, I mentioned there will be multiple training sessions for you to complete, but I made changes afterwards. Now there is one (repetitive) training session. 
  2. Revise/add to your list, by incorporating the feedback I gave during the individual session. To each potential topic, please add a sentence explaining why that topic needs your attention in Wikipedia. Please email me the updated list (and reasons) before our class starts on Th. 5/14.

Week 4

Soka University Orientation via Zoom

A Soka University librarian will give us an orientation via Zoom on the resources that the library has to offer to help you find sources for your topics. We will meet online at 2:50pm on Thursday 5/21 as usual, but through a different link. I will email you the link before this meeting.

 

Before we meet, please complete the following activity:

Learn about all the topics of your interest by reading "Japan Knowledge" and make at least one minor change on one of these topics.

  • To complete this assignment, first go to the following link, and enable privileged access to Soka Univ. Library for your computer: Link Here
  • Then go to the library website and "database"; then find "Japan Knowledge."
  • Once you are there, type your topics in the search box. Read all the articles that appear, with an eye to making a minor change to the Wikipedia article of one of those topics.
  • Make a minor edit (or more, if you like) on Wikipedia.

 

While at this point you still have a few potential topics, you only need to make an edit on only one topic among your multiple potential topics. The goals of this assignment are for you to:

 

1.    Learn about the potential topics of your interest through reliable sources (“Japan Knowledge”), so that you get an even better sense of which ones you wish to delve more into for the rest of the semester.

2.    Introduce yourself to the world of Wikipedia editing.

 

As instructor, I can monitor your edits so you don't need to notify me when you are done. But if you have any questions or problems, please let me know.
