Poetic Realism is associated with Classical French cinema from the 1930s to the mid 1950s. French directors offered a model for other national cinemas to follow in the sophisticated degree of mastery that they were able to achieve in sound technology. We will watch films by great directors like Jean Renoir, Julien Duvivier, Marcel Carné, Jean Grémillon, Jean Vigo, and Jacques Feyder. These directors, screenwriters like the poet Jacques Prévert and Charles Spaak, composers like Maurice Jaubert and Georges Auric, and set designers like Alexandre Trauner all contribute to creating the unique mood and look of truly groundbreaking movies. Students will contribute to existing articles in Wikipedia. The articles to which they contribute will possess limited information regarding contemporary reception and recent academic criticism, production details, etc. and "stub" articles on French film from 1930 through the end of the German Occupation (1940-44).
