The course focuses on description and syntactic analysis of data from a wide variety of natural languages. Couched in a generative framework, the discussion revolves around phrase structure rules, movement, dependencies, among others. The goal is to get a grasp of structural properties of individual languages as well as cross-linguistic similarities. Assuming that knowledge of syntax is a form of cognition, we are trying to answer the following question - what do we know when we know the syntax of a language?
