This course will introduce you to a variety of critical methods for producing knowledge about mass cultural texts, ranging from critical race studies and Black study through Indigenous and trans studies and beyond. Practicing these methods together, we will collaboratively generate new knowledge about underserved topics, and seek to publish it on Wikipedia through the Student Program at Wiki Education. This program is designed to progress diversity, equity, and inclusion on Wikipedia; while following it, you will learn the differences between critical knowledge production for academic and public audiences. The aim is to use our classroom time to make a difference in the world outside of UCR. Our work together emphasizes collaboration and empathy; please be ready to work with your classmates. Class assessment is conducted through “ungrading,” which privileges the qualitative rather than the quantitative measure of our knowledge production over the quarter. Requirements include reading and viewing materials in advance of class sessions; discussing it together in large and small groups; receiving training from Wikipedia and making edits or writing new articles to be published on it; and completing small individual and group writing assignments and presentations. The class is experimenting with new pedagogical techniques in several ways, so openness to improvisation is helpful.
