In this course, students will examine African Americans' lived experiences as they navigated through the triumphs and challenges of petitioning for citizenship rights in the United States, from Emancipation to the present. Prominent themes highlight individual thought leaders and organizational change makers that instituted policies, programs, and practices to establish schools, regulate work/labor conditions, combat disenfranchisement and racial segregation, assist urban migrants, and advocate for equal rights at home and abroad from the war years, the Civil Rights Movement through the Black Lives Matter movement.
