- In class - Introduction to working "live" on Wikipedia
February 28th in class.
Welcome to our Wikipedia project page. This page will guide you through the remaining steps of the Wikipedia project for our course. This page breaks down writing & posting a Wikipedia article into a series of steps, or milestones. These steps include online trainings to help you get started on Wikipedia.
Our course has also been assigned a Wikipedia Content Expert. Check your Talk page for notes from them. You can also reach them through the "Get Help" button on this page.
- Assignment - Set up your accounts
If you want to do this optional portion of the project, you must create your accounts before our first set of presentations on March 8th.
- First, individually create an account and join this course page, using the enrollment link your instructor sent you.
- Second, if you haven't yet, take the required trainings linked below.
- Third, read the Editing Wikipedia articles on biographies handout.
- And finally: every member of your group should head to the Students tab, and assign your chosen scientists name to themselves. If you are working to create a new article, assign yourself the name of the article as it will stand once it's created. If you are working to update an existing article, make sure you record the article title as it currently stands (spelling counts).

This week, everyone should have a Wikipedia account.
Week 9

- Assignment - March 8th presentation groups
If you are presenting on March 8th, you have until March 15th to complete the following:
- Identify one member of your group whose sandbox space you will copy your Wikipedia draft into. Each member of your group should leave a note in their sandbox about where your group is drafting their work & should link to that page.
- Copy your draft into the group sandbox, making adjustments for formatting using Wikipedia guidelines. You should make sure to include proper citations using the "cite" tool of the visual editor. (Resources: Editing Wikipedia pages 7–9 & the Editing Wikipedia articles on biographies handout.)
- Once you have your draft properly copied and the Wikipedia formatting updated, you can begin moving your work "live" to Wikipedia.
- TIP: Before you move your work live, remember that we have a Wikipedia content expert who can review your draft. You can reach them through the "Get Help" button on this page.
Editing an existing article?
- Re-read your article as it currently stands. Make sure the improvement you've suggested are still a good fit for the article.
- When you're ready, remember: NEVER copy and paste your draft of an article over the entire article. Instead, edit small sections at a time.
- Make sure you are in "Edit" or "Edit source" view on both your sandbox space and the live article space. You need to make sure you copy all the proper Wikipedia formatting with you.
- Copy your edits into the article. Make many small edits, saving each time, and leaving an edit summary. Never replace more than one to two sentences without saving!
Creating a new article?
- Read Editing Wikipedia page 13, and follow those steps to move your article from your Sandbox to Mainspace.
- You can also review the [[../../../training/students/sandboxes|Sandboxes and Mainspace]] online training.
Once your work is live:
- Read Editing Wikipedia page 12 to see how to create links from your article to others, and from other articles to your own. Try to link to 3–5 articles, and link to your article from 2–3 other articles.
- Then read Editing Wikipedia page 15 to review a final check-list before completing your assignment.
