Students will write new articles and edit extant ones based on their coursework exploring the history of African religions transplanted to the Americas through the Atlantic slave trade, c. 1650 - 1815. While indigenous African religions are covered, emphasis will be on African regions of North and South America. Units will be devoted to Cuba, Brazil, Haiti and the Lower South of North America (South Carolina, Florida, and Louisiana.)

Borrowing from anthropology and archaeology, we will examine new methods, sources and investigate how African religions changed across the Atlantic world.
