User: Ed Poor has been criticized at times for being too quick to take action that is often unsupported by policy. Examples of this include removing the sysop powers of several users (Something which, it must be noted, he's apologized for) and blocking for things that are not covered under the blocking policy.

I have little beef with Ed's actions, to be honest, including his temporary removal of my sysop powers. What I would like to see more of from Ed is attempts to make sure that his instinctive reasoning is backed up by consensus. A good example is the block of User:Cognition. I supported this block, and told Ed as much on his talk page. I think it was the right call at the time. But I do wish that Ed had posted news of the block on AN/I and invited comment from other people. I don't mind admins making judgment calls when confronted with situations that the rules don't cover - in fact, I think it's an important thing for admins to do. But that judgment needs to be cross-checked with other admins, and I wish Ed were quicker to do that.

I agree. Someone has to reign this guy in. He's not the Lone Ranger, you know. Does he think he's in some kind of old-timer's heaven where he can Wikipedia:be bold and get away with outrageous stunts that would have gotten even Soupy Sales a [week's suspension]?

Okay, enough third person fun. On to the serious stuff. I almost went unilateral and appointed Connolley an admin, after a last-minute change of heart - but asked for and took advice from others. How about that?

And when I deleted vfd, I didn't keep deleting it. I created a proposed policy page after the fact, and kept tally of responses. There is clearly not overwhelming support for an immediate, permanent elimination of the current system. I accepted the one-minute block for 'disruption' gracefully, if ostentatiously, and have retreated to clean-up at articles linked to template:wrongtitle. Uncle Ed 17:56, August 2, 2005 (UTC)

Someone prepared to do things quickly is a good idea. I watched Ed's soluition to the sysop-block war: it worked out OK. I've been bannlocked by Ed; that was OK too. But... sometimes he does need to stop and think, IMHO. Just recently Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Pseudoscience (and his comments on the mailing list) come to mind. So... if things are urgent, I like Ed's jumping in. For *non-urgent* matters, I think he ought to slow down a bit. William M. Connolley 21:10:05, 2005-07-12 (UTC).
