Gender totals vs undeclared

Shouldn't the Gender statistics have a column for "undisclosed"? —Anne Delong (talk) 21:26, 5 March 2013 (UTC)

The page doesn't report options equal to defaults, because they are not recorded in the database: you can see below that there isn't a number for "en", it's just the difference between number of total users and all those who set a preference. --Nemo 08:04, 5 November 2013 (UTC)

I think Anne is just suggesting that a row be added in the table, or explanation added above, with the ( {{NUMBEROFUSERS}}:47,352,928 ) figure in it, which I'd agree with. I think a more descriptive name for the row would be needed though (than just "default" or "undisclosed"). Maybe something like

"Total number of accounts, including those set to default (undeclared), female, and male."

When I stumbled upon this page, the same thought came to my mind as to Anne Delong's. An ideal solution might be Nemo's suggestion to calculate the number of users with the default setting, but this might be a little difficult. I wonder if it would break the bot if I would just follow Quiddity's suggestion and put the total number of users in the lead? Bever (talk) 17:21, 5 April 2014 (UTC)

Hi Anne Delong, Nemo, Quiddity, Bever, and Wuerzele. I added an "Undeclared edits wiki pages" row. It's the total number of users on the wiki minus the users who have declared male or female, using simple counting and subtraction. --MZMcBride (talk) 04:08, 31 March 2018 (UTC)

Hi Hexatekin. It wasn't Wikimedia Foundation Inc. that added this user preference, as I recall. The gender user preference exists because non-English languages need it. In German, for example, you might refer to a female user as Benutzerin while a male user would be referred to as Benutzer in various parts of the user interface. What is "Skinname-"?

Hi Michael Chidester. I'm not sure I'd assume anything about MediaWiki. But yeah, probably.

I tried to get the data cleaned up at some point. It was an unmitigated disaster (cf. phabricator:T54778 and phabricator:T114208). I still think it would be reasonable to clean up this data. It actually made me more aggravated after the last incident that we didn't just finish ripping off the band-aid. On the brighter side, I now have a stupid snippet in m:User:MZMcBride/global.js that can set the skin I want. And at some point we'll have global (across public Wikimedia wikis) user preferences.
