Before class[edit]

Optional homework before class: Consider who reads Wikipedia, what people expect from Wikipedia, what content on Wikipedia is highest quality, and what you might like to do on Wikipedia. Check the following lists:

Week 1: Why edit Wikipedia?[edit]

In class
  • Discuss purpose of course
  • Overview of the course
  • Introduction to how Wikipedia will be used in the course
Homework
  • Create an account and then complete the online training for students. During this training, you will make edits in a sandbox and learn the basic rules of Wikipedia.
  • Create a User page, and and click the "enroll" button on the top left of this course page.
  • To practice editing and communicating on Wikipedia, introduce yourself to any Wikipedians helping your class (such as a Wikipedia Ambassador), and leave a message for a classmate on their user talk page.

Week 2: Editing basics[edit]

In class
  • Basics of editing
  • Anatomy of Wikipedia articles, what makes a good article, how to distinguish between good and bad articles
  • Tips on finding the best articles to work on
  • Handouts: Using Talk Pages handout and Evaluating Wikipedia brochure
Milestone
  • All students have Wikipedia user accounts and are listed on this course page.

Week 3: How to ask for assistance[edit]

Week 4: Tour of Wikipedia[edit]

  • Tour Wikipedia more broadly to understand how it works and how your contribution will be evaluated.
Assignment (due on your own time! Your instructor will watch and follow up!)
  • Add 1–2 sentences of new information, backed up with a citation to an appropriate source, to a Wikipedia article related to the class.
