I think this is a good idea, but hopefully over time will be largely unnecessary (because issues will be automatically coordinated). It's definitely good to have a go-to person who can translate between languages. I'm not a big fan of the metaphor though; the different language wikis should not be thought of as separate nation-states. --The Cunctator

I really hope it will be unecessary over time, but right now, it is a fact I can see on a daily basis that most french NEVER come here, and have no idea what is going on. I try to change that fact, but since it is a fact, it has to be taken into account.
Why did you change the title of these pages from non-english to international ? what are your arguments ?

interlanguage linking

There are more and more interlanguage links added as our wikipedias are growing. I think it's time to bring them into an order - alphabetical?. It will be confusing for the reader if the other languages links are, as they are now, randomly sorted. What do you think?

proposal for interlanguage linking:

  • always take all interlanguage links which are already in the article with you. If you put a link to the german version in the french article and there is no link to esperanto and english, put it in, too.
  • if you edit an article with many interlanguage links, take the time to sort them alphabetically!

--Elian

Note that ‹alphabetically› is by the language's own name for itself (or the closest approximation in Latin-1), so the order is the same in every language wiki (using a Latin script). — Toby 14:36 Nov 17, 2002 (UTC)

Hello

I am the ambassador for the Spanish Wiki, Enciclopedia Libre and perhaps soon for the French Wiki. I would like to give more information on what happend on these wiki : projects, discussions, war edits, topic with many new articles, how many new contributors, vandalism ... Wikipedia:Embassy will be soon too long and impossible to edit, so I have thought to make new sections

Is it OK ?

Youssefsan 22:11 Feb 4, 2003 (UTC)

What's Enciclopedia Libre ? Mintguy

The short answer is Enciclopedia Libre (El) ;-). In February 2002 a lot of Spanish Wikipedians left es.wikipedia.org to go on a new server. Now there are two different Spanish free encyclopedias projects. Unfortuanately EL has much more contributors and articles. -- Youssefsan 14:12 Feb 9, 2003 (UTC)

Hi, it is a very nice project. Hope you add Hebrew support for it soon. I tested in the sandbox: mose things do come out well in Hebrew, but there are some problems, such as alignment to left, not recognizing the "Enter" when it is between 2 Hebrew lines and combination of Hebrew and English. There is a relative of this project, another clone of Wiki, that supports Hebrew (and has many other very nice features - you can copy) in http://sourceforge.net/projects/chiqchaq it is the technology behind of a very big content site in Israel, http://www.beofen-tv.co.il/cgi-bin/chiq.pl ("beofen tivi" is "Naturally" in Hebrew") when you enable Hebrew - plese let me know, and I will both contribute myself and spread the word in Israel. Thanks, Oded, dedel@netvision.net.il

Linking Chinese Article to the English Article

I've already asked the following Q once, but it apparently seems to be deleted! I visited the Archives and didn't find it. Why is it delete?

When linking a Chinese article to its corresponding English one (adding the interlanguage link [[zh:___]] after "Other languages: " at the top of the Edit Page), do I link the traditional Chinese version or do I have to link to the simplified version? I just linked the traditional version to overseas Chinese because that's the original version I wrote. --Menchi 00:48 Feb 21, 2003 (UTC)

As a test I linked to both. That works, but you can not see which is which, except that the numerical code that pops up is different. One solution is to have two Chinese wikipedias, another is to have the two links in fixed order for all articles, a third solution would be some software change, for example showing the Chinese characters in the popup, or just an indication for traditional/simplified. - Patrick 10:35 Feb 23, 2003 (UTC)
Having two Chinese Wikipedia is unneccessary, as disccused in Chinese Wikipedia. I think the solution is to link to the newer one. After all on each page there is still a link that will direct to another Chinese version. --Formulax 09:43 Mar 9, 2003 (UTC)

Moved from Wikipedia:Village pump:

Where is the real Spanish wiki? I think it hurts the project that we do not have a clear link to that site. The main page should link to it. Where is it? Dietary Fiber

As far as I know, the Spanish monarchy has not endorsed any wiki. ;) Are you trying to get at the Spanish Wikipedia (http://es.wikipedia.org/ ) or the more active Enciclopedia Libre (http://enciclopedia.us.es/ ), which is not a part of the Wikipedia project? --Brion 22:03 Mar 31, 2003 (UTC)

Yes, plz create a front page link to it. Its a wiki and its Spanish and its 600% larger than the es.wikipedia Dietary Fiber

Why? It is not a part of Wikipedia. --mav

Out of educational respect and Wikilove, it is rude to not link to them as they are trying to do the same thing we are. Dietary Fiber

It was rude of them to fork es.wiki to begin with. They are already linked on Wikipedia:About which in turn is linked from every single page here. That is IMO way more than enough. --mav
Someone having been rude to you is a poor excuse for being rude to them, even if it is a frequent one. EL may not be a part of Wikipedia, but it's goal, process, and license are identical, making es.wikipedia.org largely redundant. It makes more sense to me to link it more tightly from es.wikipedia.org than from the English-language front page, though, if we're to continue to maintain it. We don't link any other non-Wikipedia projects from there, just the other Wikipedia subprojects (meta-wikipedia, wiktionary) and the other languages Wikipedia is available in. --Brion 01:03 Apr 1, 2003 (UTC)

Hello, I would like to start the occitan language page of WIKEPEDIA. But this is the first time I come on so a web site with a possibility to create a living edition of an occitan language speaking encyclopaedia and I am not very expert in computers and Internet.

Adieu-Siatz a totis. Théodore dich Lop l'Aquitan, Lupus Aquitanus.

Hello. I would like to help you. Brion, the guy who usually set up new languages is on vacations for 2 weeks. Perhaps, the best thing is to wait until he comes back and reply to your message. --Youssefsan 12:13 17 Jul 2003 (UTC)

This page should be moved to meta

I suggest that this page and its other language counterparts should be moved to meta (this embassy would be at m:English Wikipedia Embassy, for example). That way we all have one place to view additions or changes to any one embassy. This will aid the process of informing all embassies of updates. For example, activity on the French Embassy page on meta will be noticed by Wikipedian's from other languages; some of these people will speak French and another language even though they may not spend much time on fr.wiki; they would then be able to help the listed ambassador by translating the French updates into the other language they know. Furthermore m:Wikipedia News could be used for many of these updates in the first place. If nobody objects I'll move the page myself in a week or two and interwiki redirect the en.wikipedia page to its meta counterpart. --mav 06:11, 13 Aug 2003 (UTC)

Article translation

How do you go about translating a page into another language? Do you have to go into the French/German/Italian wikipedia and create the page again there, or what? Olivia Curtis 18:35 Feb 25, 2003 (UTC)

yup. -- Tarquin 19:04 Feb 25, 2003 (UTC)

Thanks for your succinct answer. What do you do next? I've created a new page to match the one in the English wiki, but there still isn't a thing at the top saying 'other languages:' - how do you do that? Olivia Curtis 21:07 Feb 25, 2003 (UTC)

Did you copy in the interlanguage links? (BTW, it's always best if you can give a link to the page you're working with as an example.) --Brion 21:12 Feb 25, 2003 (UTC)

Thanks - I didn't know about those but have got there now. Olivia Curtis 21:24 Feb 25, 2003 (UTC)

You have to log in in the other wikipedia separately, then create an article similar to doing that in the English wikipedia. - Patrick 21:35 Feb 25, 2003 (UTC)

Is it ok to translate an article from another language Wikipedia to another one? For instance, I was working on translating something from the Spanish Wikipedia to the English one when it occurred to me that I should at least ask about it ... mgmei

Yes, of course it is! Be sure to include an interlanguage link, and it's good form to note the source in the edit summary. --Brion 06:46 Feb 28, 2003 (UTC)

master list

Since it's a pain to update dozens of pages with new names, there is now a master list at m:Wikipedia:Embassy. We can choose whether to keep a local copy here or not. I suggest the list of events be moved to Meta too. -- Tarquin 14:15, 15 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Working in a language in which you are likely to make mistakes

Is it acceptable to work in a Wikipedia whose language you have only studied academically, and may make grammatical errors in? I was thinking about working in the Spanish Wikipedia, but I have only taken Spanish through a second-year college level (probably 7 years of classes in and before college) and I'd be likely to make grammar errors. Given my experience trying to fix up the travel article, I don't want to put anyone else in the same boat, but I feel I could make significant contributions there. -- Pakaran 01:35, 5 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Personally, I think that would great. The small Wikipedias (Arabic for example) need all the help they can get and would probably welcome people with a less than perfect knowledge of the language. I don't know whether people at the Spanish Wikipedia would feel the as I do though. Maybe you could ask at es:Wikipedia:Café. Angela. 01:45, 5 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Ok thanks, I just made an account and posted there. -- Pakaran 01:59, 5 Dec 2003 (UTC)
I occasionally write stuff in the French wikipedia...despite about 15 years of French classes, I can still only write something that is almost French-like, but the French-speakers there don't seem to mind fixing my mistakes. Likewise, I don't mind fixing non-English peoples' mistakes when they post here. I think the idea is that it is better to have an article with grammar mistakes than no article at all. Adam Bishop 01:59, 5 Dec 2003 (UTC)
That makes sense - and those of us who are multilingual are in a position to translate articles over, and they can then be fixed much faster than an article could be written from scratch, or so I'd like to think. -- Pakaran 02:07, 5 Dec 2003 (UTC)
Yes, I can attest to French Wikipedians' willingness to patiently correct your...I mean, my, mistakes. My French knowledge is so "basic" (that reads "sucky") that sometimes things that came out make no sense except to myself. So we have to discuss those things in the Talk page, and once the native speaker got what I mean, he helps to make the French decent.
Chinese WP only rarely gets non-Chinese contributors. The only one we have currently is a Brittany linguist who happens to speak Chinese better than me. It's basically the same friendliness in all other Wikipedias I tried: Vietnamese and definitely English. So, get off your hesitating chair and just do it! --Menchi 04:54, 5 Dec 2003 (UTC)

One way around this is to set up an editing partnership, as we have been doing at the History of Poland series. I write a draft section in (I hope) good English. Various Polish users who do not have good English then make comments and add more material. I then edit their material into good English. This seems to work quite well. Adam 03:32, 5 Dec 2003 (UTC)

We have an extremely active contributor over on the Welsh Wikipedia, who is very keen. Unfortunately it's obvious that he's translating articles from the English Wikipedia word-for-word and hasn't twigged that Welsh is a Verb-Subject-Object language while English is Subject-Verb-Object so the word order is all wrong! However any article is better than none, and it's not much of a hassle to correct the articles afterwards once I have an idea what he meant. Hopefully the grammar will become clearer to him over time. Arwel 12:02, 5 Dec 2003 (UTC)

The article asserts that "The master list of ambassadors is at m:Wikipedia:Embassy", but in fact that seems to be a dead link. -- Jmabel 22:07, 16 Dec 2003 (UTC)

It's Wikipedia Embassy, not Wikipedia:Embassy. I've fixed the links. Angela.

New articles on Serbian Wikipedia

... Are ready; what is the method to publish it at the same pages on en:Wikipedia? I added sr:лингвистика link to en:Linguistics, but someone removed that. (I am Miloš.)

I don't think anyone has removed it. It appears under the sidebar with the other interlanguage links. It looks like you did it exactly right. Angela. 04:33, 10 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Single sign-on for all languages

Hi,

is it by design that you have to register a separate user account for every Wikipedia language? I just came accross that question when updating the Future Crew article first in German and after that in English, where I found myself not logged in. I had to create a new account for en.wikipedia.org first.

IMO it makes no sense requiring users which are already registered in one language's Wikipedia to create a different account for every language they decide to work with.

Is "single-sign-on" in all wikipedias technically possible? If so, then this is a feature request ;-) -- Iromeister 00:55, 1 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Absolutely, I'm registered on 3 language wikis, wiktionary, metawiki and wikicommons. And it does get to be annoying after a while constantly logging in. I would put it on remember me but I'm on a public computer. Not only that, but if you don't edit anything for a while, you're automatically logged out(like now). - Dalta (21:39 11 June 2005)

Interwiki guidelines

  • Halló! Some months ago I started to search informations about where to insert and how to sort interlanguage links at various Wikipedias. I thing that information should be available in a central place, as at the "embassies" linked to en:Wikipedia:Embassy.
  • See what I have "collected" so far at commons:User:Gangleri/sandbox/Template:Interwiki guidelines. Would be happy if you would add information about en: if your community has already decided about this. Thanks in advance! Best regards Gangleri | Th | T 01:15, 2005 Apr 20 (UTC)

Belaya Vezha?

Hopefully I've got the right place here... Someone included Sarkel as meaning "White Tower" in Turkic, but Turkic isn't a single language, and I can't figure out how to make it a proper interwiki link... The link they included, for the record, was Belaya Vezha on en. Sarkel is no help, as it says the words are in Slavic, which isn't a specific language either, as far as I can tell. None of the language wikis I tried had anything under this Romanization (tr, be, sl), but I wasn't terribly surprised... I'm WAY outside of my depth here. Help? -- nae'blis 21:11, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

Contributing in different languages

I have an account with the EN Wikipedia, but would also like to contribute to the DE and FR Wikipedias. How does this work, since it seems that it's only possible to have one account with one language version of wikipedia? I'd really appreciate any help on this. --Marimg 09:12, 26 July 2007 (UTC)

You need to register separate user accounts for each different language, as they are functionally independent entities. Prophet121 01:30, 4 June 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Prophet121 (talkcontribs)

Meta?

Universal log-in

Am I the only person who wishes one didn't have to register seperately for Wikipedias in different languages? Why make people jump through extra hoops because they want to participate in more than one language? And it's a pain to have to log in and out constantly. Bacrito 23:01, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

No, I agree with you. Regards, Neranei (talk) 00:05, 19 October 2007 (UTC)
Reading older entries, I see my question was asked by others more than two years ago, with no action taken or explanation offered. And that there's been very little discussion on this page in general. I guess it's pointless for me to be posting here. Bacrito 23:06, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

Giovanni Luppis
