Libya 1941

I need a map with place names and desert tracks, especially for Cyrenaica, for a narrative in the Wiki page for Operation Sonnenblume. I've trawled commons and found a few which help but would really like something like [[File:Operation Ariel 1940 map.png]] or a series of them. Nontrivial request: Recovering unclear pdf document

Hello, I don't know if this is the correct forum etc. so apologies.

I'm working on a complete rewrite of w:Bengal famine of 1943 in my personal sandbox. The central document for this topic (though it's biased) is the Woodhead Commission Famine report. It's a available in pdf format here. I can save that into .txt format (hurray!), and have written a little Python program that finds keywords from a large number of similar text files and stores quotes into separate files.. however, the scan quality or the Famine Commission report is so poor that extended stretches are simply gobbledygook.

This is a nontrivial request: Is there a PhotoShop guru (or similar) who could sharpen the MANY pages into significantly better & more scannable pdfs? Not all pages could be fixed, because some show the curvature of the book pages etc., but I think many many could be improved.

I have downloaded an evaluation copy of PhotoShop etc and tried to use Sharpen and Levels or Layers whatever to make each page more machine readable, but I don't know how to do it for an entire (large!) report, and I don't know how to scan them or save them to text instead of image (printing every page and scanning each manually is obviously much too much work). I also have a family life and work etc. and learning how to do all these things would just take too much time.

Does anyone have suggestions?

In theory, this service might be valuable for other old documents scanned to pdf, but i dunno how much demand there would be for such a service.

The biggest problem seems to be the missing chunks of text from the low-quality originals and monochrome scanning. Unfortunately, there's nothing that can really be done about that beyond hand-painting in the missing black pixels. (Brightness and contrast will have no effect on the monochrome image, and converting it to grayscale or full color won't change that.) However, the skewing of the text from the page curvature of the originals can be fixed with Photoshop's Liquify tool, or the GIMP's Cage Transform tool. Either way, you just need to set up some straight guides where the boundaries of the text should be, then start tweaking it until it fits in them.

I use AutoCAD professionally, and as a part of my job I use a plugin called Raster Design that comes with a very controllable and precise warping tool called Rubbersheet. That's probably the best tool to use for something like this. Unfortunately, I only have access to this tool at work, and they frown upon me spending several hours doing stuff for Wikipedia on company time. If you know someone who uses AutoCAD for civil or mapping work from home who has this plug-in, they could help you. I could do it, but I'd have to do it a little at a time and it could be as much as a month or so before I could be done. MjolnirPants Tell me all about it. 17:39, 8 April 2016 (UTC)

@MjolnirPants: Thanks for the reply. You know, when I posted this I was kinda hoping that there would be some advanced options available so that some super-user could just tweak the settings a bit and do the whole job in... not an unreasonable amount of time. It's certainly not worth hours and hours of anyone's time (unless they just intrinsically enjoy doing that sort of thing). So no, don't worry about the "little at a time for as much as a month or so" scenario. If it's impractical, then it's impractical, and that's OK. @Lingzhi: I notice that legibility due to pixelation is very much a function of one's zoom choice. At 290% the one-up view is quite legible. Running Acrobat Standard's OCR on it does help a bit, straightening the scans. Failing that, you might try asking @GabrielF: if it is possible to get a cleaner scan made from HOLLIS 005379903. The quick and brutal answer is "Yes, it looks heavily edited". The longer (more accurate and less mean) answer is as follows:

In looking just at the new image, I can see some sharp edges, some unnatural smoothness (like a smart blur) in the hair and a greenish tint to the image. It looks modified to me, but it doesn't look bad, except in comparison to professional photographs. The subject is pretty clear, and the image is not blurry at all. In comparison to the older one, the greenish tint becomes more prominent; it's clear you reconstructed the background, because there's a vertical bit on the right present in the original that's not there in the original and the vertical line on the left is part of the window that produced all those reflections is a bit unnerving, absent all the reflections.

My overall judgement is: It has problems, some of which are pretty obvious. But at the end of the day, considering what you were working with, and what we use the image for, it was a decent job. You did a lot with a little, and while it's not perfect, it's a huge improvement over the original. I've taken the liberty of erasing the left-side vertical line and adjusting the colors back to a more neutral shade. Rv if needed. MjolnirPants Tell me all about it. 13:09, 30 April 2016 (UTC)

I hope it was helpful in some way! The green tint is a real bitch for me... I get so locked into looking at details that I quite often miss when adjusting colors brings in a tint, especially a green tint. But show me someone else's work, and it stands out like a sore thumb. Convert images to .svg

All of the characters I uploaded to the page Cirth are .png (Gondolinic runes and Additional Angerthas Erebor cirth) or worst .jpg (Runes from The Hobbit) format images.
This causes size issues when using Mobile view (i.e. some the caracters are displayed too small to be read).
I would therefore these images to be fully converted in .svg format.
I am looking for someone who would like to do this as I am not able to.
(I submitted the same question at the Teahouse, hope this is not a problem.)

Graphic labs best practices

Hi Graphists ! I'm pushing further the organisation of the Graphic labs / workshops, and Map labs / workshop to follow identified best practices. On commons, the German and French labs used to tag their works with convenient tag templates such as {Atelier graphique} (lit. Graphic workshop, contains code {Graphic Lab|fr|image} !) or {Atelier cartographique} (lit. Map workshop, contains code {Graphic Lab|fr|map}) (see our shared template). Also, I created the 2 following template :

1. {{Graphic Lab-en}} (contains code {Graphic Lab|en|image})
2. {{Map Lab-en}} (contains code {Graphic Lab|en|map})
3. let's Use them when uploading !

It's our way to make our graphic and mapmaking work visible, which lead to more requests and new graphists to join the team. That's a great tool for communication for us too :)

Mark Weinberger photo request

Hi, I am having an issue getting a photo — File:Mark Weinberger at the EY World Entrepreneur of the Year 2016.jpg — added to Mark Weinberger, global chairman and CEO of EY. I am not sure this is the most appropriate venue to ask for this kind of help, but my recent posts on the Mark Weinberger Talk page and WikiProject Biography have not received any responses and I am not sure where else to go.

A brief history: The photo was originally added to the page by NinjaRobotPirate, but it was deleted after Justlettersandnumbers requested suitable permission to OTRS. I have sent permissions through OTRS and the photo has been restored in Wikimedia Commons.

Can an editor add it to the infobox at Mark Weinberger?

Question

I don't know if this is the best place to raise this matter, but I'm not sure where else to do so and thought that at the very least participants here will be familiar with image policies.

My question pertains to File:Manos Krystalis, Modeling in front of Corvette, Los Angeles CA, October 2012.jpg. Namely, do we have any rule that explicitly prohibits rotating the photo so that it's angled, with superfluous whitespace filling the corners of the image's overall bitspace, instead of upright? I certainly hope so, because the image is frankly ridiculous and strikes me as not at all appropriate for use in an encyclopedia, but I don't know for sure whether we do or not. sharpness of svg converted to png for use as a background image

The cs1|2 citation templates use background images specified in Module:Citation/CS1/styles.css to replace the generic external link icon for links that have certain accessibility. This use of css to do this is relatively new and I've just noticed that the background images are nowhere near as sharp as the properly scaled svg images from which they derive. Compare cs1|2 against the same image scaled to the correct size:

What can we do to prevent MediaWiki from converting the image to png so that the icon as used in a cs1|2 citation retains it proper sharpness?

Modifying Infobox Map to suit geographical coordinates

The maps in use in the infoboxes of the Kolkata neighbourhoods, say for example Sealdah or Ballygunge pages, is rather unclear and does not show much. There is a map in the Infobox of Dharmatala page which is much clearer and shows some important neighbourhoods. However, this map is not adjusted to geographical coordinates as those in the Sealdah or Ballygunge pages. Kindly make the map on the Dharmatala page suitable to take in geographical coordinates. Then it can be used on different pages of Kolkata neighbourhoods as an alternateive to the present map. The present map need not be removed. It can also continue without any change and editors can choose between the two. Kindly help. I have also placed a request at Category talk:Wikipedia requested maps. What about Xfig?

Also Xfig is a very good program to produce vector images. It handles many formats, which also includes code for LaTeX packages like PSTricks.

Another useful feature would be to render within wikipedia code for such packages, in the same way that it renders LaTeX formulas. If the later is possible, many diagrams from LaTeX sources could be exported to wikipedia and some simple diagrams could be quickly typed in the same way that today we can include LaTeX formulas in articles.

Illustrations with easily overridden text for localization?

One of the things that has stymied my quest for using Commons illustrations is that one often finds a perfect image in the wrong language. This is more typical for illustrations than photos, but occurs there too. As I understand it (not much), SVG stores text in an XML tag so it should be visible to automated tools? If so, it would seem an automated tool might take replacement text and substitute it in.

If this is possible, I would like to propose such a system for use on the Commons. I can think of many ways it might be implemented, but for discussion, consider a new tab on the image page called "localization" (or better!) that extracts any text found in the original into a table. The user can then add additional copies of the table which have a second column where they type in the translations, and a combo where they select the language. One would also need a combo on the first table to set the original language.

After that, one might link to such an image with something like File:original_in_german_ENGLISH.

I myself am not too versatile with inkscape and co, so I would like to ask for help with this project. Handling logo images with unreadable white parts?

Hi! I just uploaded File:DCCC logo.svg as fair use as it was the official SVG logo of the DCCC unlike the PNG one that was in use on the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee page. However, it has a white background and white elements -- some of the lines and critically the text.
