Towards the end of the month instead?[edit]

It'll be less than a month since the last one. I'll be right in the middle of exams at that point, so there's no way I can come. Can we not have it towards the end of the month instead (i.e. past the 20th). These are just way too often for me to even consider coming. Also, there's no way I can come if I can't get cheap train tickets, and I won't be able to with less than a month to book. Al Tally (talk) 22:39, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OK here's my thoughts on organising this. We're trying to get it established as a regular monthly thing. We're still in the process of getting the ball rolling though, and at this stage it's by no means certain that the events will continue to attract enough interest. ...but it has been successful so far, so fingers crossed.
Now I'm thinking one thing which will help, is to stick to a routine. We want people to get used to it, and keep a spot for it in their diaries. So "second Sunday of the month" is the routine we're going for. We'll probably also stick with the Penderel's Oak venue, for the same reason. We're getting a few people suggesting different venues and different dates/times etc, but hopefully sticking to a routine will work out better.
Of course there is also the question of whether once a month is too often. The more often we meet up, the more diluted is the significance of any particular meet-up. But we do have quite a few people in London, and it's these people who the events are really aimed at. For people like you (and there are other people in your position) I guess it's difficult for you to decide whether it's worth making the journey in to London. Maybe we should designate some BIG events. User:Geni said he'll probably come along every other month, so that makes even numbered meet-ups 1 person bigger! But maybe an BIG meet-up on an annual basis?

I'll probably organise one in Manchester. It's just too far to go on such short notice. Al Tally (talk) 13:58, 12 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well if you assume once a month then you have as much notice as you like. Monthly though is only realistic for those who are acutaly in london or very close to it.Geni 00:08, 13 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I see you changed your mind Al tally :-) I thought I wasn't going to be able to make it myself (after all my talk) but turns out I can. So see you on Sunday!
I've also stuck in a tentative Wikipedia:Meetup/London 11 arrangement. Imaginative hey? You see where we're going with this? Obviously Manchester meet-ups are all good too, if you can drum up enough enthusiasm to make it happen. What did you think of my idea of having a designated BIG event though? We could pick a date 6 months in advance, and tell everyone that this will be the BIG one for the year. -- Harry Wood (talk) 11:14, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Apologies[edit]

Moved from the page. If you can't make it. Make your excuses here

Why?? Gordo (talk) 21:39, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Why, because last time the apologies list was longer than the attendees list. Too much negativity. There's a promotional message we need to get across somewhere reasonably near the top of the page. -- Harry Wood (talk) 10:49, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Well I am glad drinking beer is not mandatory, as I don't like the stuff anyway! My exams are over by this point so I am certainly going to think about coming. Getting up to London could be difficult however so I will default to not coming for now. - Camaron
  • Thryduulf (talk) I'll be getting very drunk on Swansea beach until the early hours of Sunday (it's the Swansea University Computer Society's annual beach party - massive bonfire + lots of alcohol), so I'll be in no fit state to make it back to London. Sorry.

  • Chafford - Although I had planned to attend, one of my closest and dearest freinds has just died in hospital and I am in no mood to be attending a social event like this, although if the organiser could keep me up to date with any other meetups, I would be very gratefull. • User:Almost-instinct apologies for depriving you all of the opportunity for patronising a newbie, but hopes to come to number 11, and promises not to get any cleverer between now and then. Oh, excuse: Nadal - Federer in the French Open final, of course! —Preceding comment was added at 07:48, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
  • User:Adambro - Sorry, couldn't make it, was mountain biking up in North Yorkshire. Adambro (talk) 17:36, 8 June 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Harry Wood (talkcontribs) [reply]

Privacy[edit]

Just to share a tip that worked at the recent NYC meetup, we announced before hand where any cameras would be and drew an imaginary line halfway back in the room, so anyone who did not want to be in any pictures, could simply sit behind the line. MBisanz talk 11:33, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Would one have to wear a name badge with one's WP name on? ;-) almost-instinct 12:50, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
We don't wear name badges and the meets tend to have 10 or fewer people, and a lot of us have met before anyway so there's no need. However I'd say to anyone uploading any photos not to put captions and identify people without that person's consent. Al Tally talk 13:54, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
